Win number one didn?t come in Onaway for the Lady Hurons Tuesday night. First year coach David O?Bryant?s charges showed signs of coming out of a shooting slump, but had to settle for a 59-35 loss at the hands of the Lady Cardinals. Nikkie LaLonde?s coast-to-coast layup gave the Hurons a brief, and their only lead at 2-0, then the Cards went on a 15-2 run to close the quarter. Coach Marty Mix?s Cardinals led 26-4 with 5:55 left in the second quarter before the full-court press forced O?Bryant to call time out. Rogers City managed just five points until the end of the half, three from sophomore center Rebecca Meredith and two from junior forward Kelleigh Lamb.

Rogers City played better offensively in the second half, outscoring Onaway 10-8 in the third quarter and 16-15 in the fourth. ?We played one of our worst halves of basketball followed by one of our better shooting halves. Onaway played aggressive with their guards and we didn?t take care of the ball well enough,? O?Bryant said. Becky Talaske, Shelby Schleben, LaLonde and Meredith each scored seven points while Lamb added six.

Kallie Shimel?s 21 points, including a school record six three-pointers, paced Onaway. THE JUNIOR varsity Hurons lost a 44-20 game to Onaway. Last Friday at Newberry, the Huron girls led 15-8 after the first quarter,

thanks to good ball movement, great shooting and aggressive defense. Rogers City?s first four shots went in and Talaske?s two free throws made the score 10-6. The good start didn?t hold up as the Hurons lost 40-32.

Schleben?s running shot missed the mark on the next Huron possession, but she made up for it with a three-pointer on the possession at the 1:04 mark of the first quarter. Rogers City couldn?t make a field goal in the second quarter, allowing Newberry to take a 20-18 lead at the half. Newberry owned the offensive glass in the third quarter, increasing the lead to 31-25 after three quarters.

TALASKE HAD a good overall game, nearly recording a triple-double with 10 points, 13 rebounds and 7 steals. Katie Priestly, who scored 25 of Newberry?s 36 points in a 36-26 win earlier in the season, was held to one point by the Hurons? defense. The junior varsity Hurons won a close 35-31 contest over Newberry. Rogers City led 6-0 after one quarter and 16-6 at halftime. Streich paced the scoring attack with 12 points.
