Vikes amp it up a notch to stay unbeaten

At the halfway point of the regular season, things couldn?t be better for the Posen boys? basketball. Not only are the Vikings 10-0 (6-0 North Star league) and ranked sixth in Class D for the second week in a row, but they are coming off an inspired home floor win against basketball rival Hillman. Senior captain Shane Hentkowski?s season best 25 points paced the squad to a convincing, 64-47, victory over the visitors, who brought their typical large contingent of vocal fans.

The teams were even through one (9-9), but Posen took control as the game progressed through the second quarter and went up by nine at the break. Hillman became frustrated, going up against the Vikes? tenacious defense. While head coach Steve Hentkowski?s son made the noise in the scoring column in this game, it was his men in the middle that were getting the praise.

HENTKOWSKI WAS pleased with the effort of Tyler Kuffel, Zach Idalski and Travis Hirschman for their defensive performance in the paint against the Tigers best players. The coach also is pleased that his team has risen to new levels against the teams they need to beat to win the conference. Following the win against Hale, the coach said the win against Hillman was even better. Th

e schedule doesn?t get an easier with a trip to Mio Friday night. ?Mio has their starters back from injuries,? said Hentkowski.

With more than a week between games, Hentkowski said his team has been loose in practice and ?are having fun,? but wanted a more serious tone as the key road game approached. Posen committed only 11 turnovers against Hillman and shot nine treys. They scored 25 points in the third, with Shane netting 12 points, including two threes. Jerome Ciarkowski added 14 points and six rebounds, while David Kerr had 11 points and six boards. Kuffel had eight and was 6-for-12 from the free-throw line.

The boys travel to Au Gres Tuesday, before returning home Jan. 28 to host Fairview. Junior varsity results were not made available.
