New business burglary wipes out inventory

by Peter Jakey, Managing Editor

The owners of Absolom?s Smoke Shop, located in the old Onaway Police Department building next to the parking lot of Tom?s Family Market, reported someone had entered the business and stole of their inventory sometime between 8 p.m. on Jan. 5 and Jan. 6 when the theft was discovered.

The suspect or suspects took over $2,000 worth of merchandise, including a four-hose three-foot Hookah, and other smoking and tobacco related products. ?There are no signs of forced entry, so I?m really not sure how they got in,? said chief James Gibson. ?They are going to delay the opening because of the break-in.? All of their inventory was taken.

There was a break-in of a pole barn behind Curves, however there?s no evidence to indicate the crimes are linked, said Gibson. The B & E?s downtown are the only ones which have been reported. ?You have a lot of people, stuff happens, they don?t report it,? he added.

The Onaway Police Department is asking anyone with information to contact either the Onaway Police Department at (989) 733-7755 or Presque Isle County central dispatch at (989) 734-2156.

The owners, according to a notice posted on the door of the business, are offering a reward for any information leading to the identification and arrest of the person or persons responsible for this crime. The reward didn?t specify the reward amount.
