This year?s New Year?s Baby, born to Cruz and Cassandra Quintanilla of Millersburg, was actually born on the first day of the year. In recent years, the New Year’s baby hasn?t arrived for a few weeks.

Israel James Quintanilla entered the world only eight hours and 15 minutes into 2011, and not only was Alpena Regional Hospital?s first baby, but he?s the Outlook?s first baby too. His parents have been showered with gift certificates and prizes from area merchants, including a one-year subscription to the Outlook.

Brother Anthony Creamer, 4, and sister Alexis Quintanilla, 3, welcomed Israel home. With so much going on around the Quintanilla home, with Christmas and the birth of a new child, baby Israel took a back seat to Alexis for a few hours Wednesday, as she celebrated her Dec. 26 birthday.

MOTHER CASSANDRA had been having inconsistent contractions at the end of the year, and wasn?t sure if the baby was going to be born on Dec. 31 or the first. ?I had been having contractions three days b

efore,? she said. The newborn weighed in at 7 pounds 14 ounces and measured 20 and 3/4 inches.

Still, there was even more excitement at the home, as Cassandra?s sister?s, Erica Creamer, has a cat that gave birth to four kittens a few hours before Israel?s birth.

His grandparents are Anthony and Delia Schisler Creamer of Millersburg, Linda Minick of Bay City and Raymond Westlake of Westland. His great-grand parents are Raymond Westlake of Westland and Jane Lawrence of Harrisville.

The Quintanillas live as part of an extended family that includes Cassandra?s parents and younger siblings.

The participating businesses involved in the annual first baby contest include: Manzana?s Restaurant, Onaway Community Federal Credit Union, Sunrise Cable Network, Painter Petroleum, Baumgarten Forest Products, Sally?s Hairstyling, Subway, Citizens National Bank, Tom?s Family Market, Onaway Auto & Finance and Wood Winds.
