Hurons run to win over Newberry

Any win in the Upper Peninsula is a good one, especially after a long drive to Newberry. The Huron boys? basketball team notched win number two with a 53-42 triumph over the Indians last Friday. Powered by an 18-3 jump-start, Rogers City led 30-21 at halftime and 37-34 at the end of the third quarter. ?We started alright when they were in a man-to-man defense. Then they went to a zone to slow us down,? said Huron coach Jessie Streich. ?When they went to a 1-3-1 zone we didn?t have very many outside shots.? Rogers City (2-4) pounded the ball inside, with Devin Hilla scoring 18 points to lead the way. He added nine rebounds in a strong performance. ?Most of his points were on put backs. He did a good job crashing the boards,? Streich said.

Junior guard Austin Brege added 14 points with four assists and four steals. Brege made the Indians pay for fouling him as he hit 5-of-6 free throws in the fourth quarter. Jesse Wilbert and Chris Waibel added six points each. The Hurons made good at the free-throw line connecting on 17-of-28 while the Indians hit on 3-of-12. The Huron junior varsity is in search of its first win of the season following a 50-7 loss to Newberry. The Indians held the Hurons without a field goal in the contest, as all the Huron points came at the free-throw line. Colton Fessler connected on 5-of-6 as the Hurons shot 7-of-8 from the line. Rogers City hosts Cheboygan Friday, as the girls? team travels to Cheboygan in another Straits Area Conference home-and-home scheduling decision.
