Posen stays undefeated with win over Rogers City

by Richard Lamb, Advance Editor

Posen finished the calendar year with an undefeated record as they topped Rogers City 64-25 in the first of two cancer awareness nights in Posen. The Vikings used an effective press, and a powerful inside game to take command of the game midway through the first quarter. Posen scored the first eight points of the game over the first three minutes. Baskets by Tracy Mulka, Korynn Hincka, Anna Couture and Lindsey Bartz either came off a successful press or on an inside shot.

Rogers City responded by scoring the next five points, first on a free throw by Nikkie LaLonde, then on a LaLonde shot after a steal and pass from Kelleigh Lamb, and then a basket by Meagan Koss, after a LaLonde steal. But that would be the last time the Hurons would threaten as Posen went on an 11-0 run and led 20-7 at the end of the first quarter. Hincka started the second quarter with a jumper from the left side. A jumper from Lamb and a hoop from Rebecca Meredith, off a pass from Shelby Schleben, made the score 22-11.

As they did in the first quarter, coach Karl Momrik?s Posen team closed out the quarter strong, spreading the points between Lindsay Ponik, LeAnn Strzelecki and Couture in a 9-0 run to close the half. Posen led 35-15 at halftime. ?We do a good job on our 1-2-2 zone defense since all the girls have been pla

ying it for a while,? said Momrik. The coach also said strong rebounding was a key to the win. Coach David O?Bryant of Rogers City said his team has struggled against taller teams all season, and he intends to stress defensive intensity in practice next week. ?I thought if we could have made a few shots in the third quarter, we could have made it close, but we just couldn?t find the basket,? he said. The special pink and white ball used for the special night didn?t find the bottom of the hoop too often for the Hurons. Hincka had 19 points while Bartz added 12 for Posen. Rogers City was led by Lalonde with 7.

In the junior varsity contest, Posen rallied from behind to snare a narrow 25-23 win over Rogers City. Posen led 10-9 at halftime, but lost the lead briefly in the third quarter before holding on in an exciting finish. Bev Bednarski paced Posen with 11 points while Brooklyn Idalski led all scorers with 13 points.
