November Requiem honored at Grand Rapids Film Festival

November Requiem wins best documentary at GRFF. ?November Requiem,? the documentary completed for the 50th Anniversary of the sinking of the Carl D. Bradley has added another honor as it received an award for the best documentary at the Grand Rapids Film Festival last weekend. The festival is a family-friendly film festival in its second year. Films from across the globe made up the 144 submissions to the festival and 58 of them were chosen as award winners.

More than 20 filmmakers from around the country joined their films at this year?s festival. Brian Belanger, director and music composer, and David Peterson, editor, were at the festival representing ?November Requiem? on the award?s night.

Earlier this summer, the documentary was honored with two Emmy Awards, one for b

est documentary and one for best music score at the 32nd Annual Michigan Emmy Awards. With this honor the documentary continues to receive recognition throughout the region. Previously the film had won TV honors including a 2009 Cine Golden Eagle (for best documentary) and a 2009 Telly Award for best editing. The film was selected to feature at several film festivals this summer and in late September at the Bay City ? HHM Film Festival and the Lake Michigan Film Competition at the East Lansing Film Festival in late October. It has also been submitted for consideration at the Sundance Film Festival in early 2011.

The film tells the story of the ill-fated Bradley, a limestone freighter lost on Nov. 18, 1958 to a fierce Lake Michigan storm. Of the 33 men who lost their lives that day 23 of them came from Rogers City. The film tells the story of the maritime tragedy from the viewpoint of the town?s families and the entire community struck down by tragedy on a single night.
