The Rogers City Junior Girls? all-star team left Rogers City last Thursday morning following a police escort through town and headed for the state tournament in Melvindale. ?It?s always an honor to go down there. You figure how many teams start out in districts and I am really happy we made it there. The girls all have a great time being down there, it is a lot of excitement for them. As far as the games go we didn?t hit the ball real well,? said coach Dennis Meredith who has coached this group of girls three times in the state tournament.

In their first action of the tournament, they faced Pinery Park at 11 a.m. Friday morning losing 9-2. Brooklyn Idalski started the game on the mound going two innings allowing no runs on two hits while striking out one. Logan Fleming then came in to pitch the third and fourth innings allowing eight runs on three hits, one walk and hitting two batters. Morgan Hall pitched the remainder of the game allowing one run on three hits. Rogers City mustered only five hits in the contest, Sarah Meredith had a double and a triple, Rebecca Meredith had two hits and Fleming had a hit in the loss.

IN THEIR second game Friday at 7 p.m., Rogers City faced Mattawan. For some of the me

mbers of the Rogers City team playing in their fourth state tournament Mattawan was a familiar opponent, one they have played each time at the tournament and have always battled with. ?Mattawan has always been tough. We beat them the first year we went down and they have beaten us the last three. But we have had some really good games; we are pretty evenly matched and it is always a good time playing them,? said coach Meredith. Rogers City again came out on the short end of the stick as they lost 9-7. Idalski went the distance on the mound allowing nine runs on nine hits while striking out six and walking one.

Fleming had two doubles in the game while Sarah Meredith added two hits. Rebecca Meredith had a hit and Courtney Streich had a hit, was hit by a pitch and had a sacrifice bunt in the contest. ROGERS CITY was then eliminated from the tournament. Two Rogers City girls? teams competed in the state finals this year as the Major Girls traveled down a few weeks ago. Little League season in Rogers City is officially over for the summer and coaches and players will look forward to another successful season next summer.
