The Rogers City varsity volleyball team traveled to Sault Ste. Marie Saturday for their first action of the season in a nine-team invitational. The Hurons did not make it out of pool play as they were still working out the kinks in the early going of the season with just a week of practices under their belts in the 2010 season.

Up against Houghton in their first games they fell 14-21 and 8-21. They then defeated Gladstone 21-18 and 21-15. Up next was a split with Brimley as the Hurons lost

game one 11-21 before winning game two 21-17. In the final game of pool play, the Hurons fell to Petoskey 8-21, 9-21. Ending up tied with Brimley in pool play, the tiebreaker was head to head, which went in favor of Brimley to put Rogers City fourth in the pool and end their day of competition as only the top three teams advanced to bracket play.

?We played pretty decent against Gladstone and Brimley. We ran some good plays and looked together. Other times we had issues with transitioning and communicating but that is not unexpected for the first tournament of the season,? said coach Kristy Smolinski.

Junior Amanda Smolinski who was named to the all-tournament team had 17 kills, four ace serves, 14 set assists, 11 digs and four blocks on the day. Sophomore Lindsey Claus had eight kills, three blocks and three digs while senior defensive specialist Emily Marx led the team with 18 digs. Junior Linnea Brege had 16 set assists and 10 digs while senior Shelby Schleben had seven ace serves and three kills on the day. The Hurons will be back in action today (Thursday) in Alpena and at Indian River Saturday. The Hurons first home match will be Sept. 9 against Oscoda as they frequently will be on the road in the early part of the season.
