Hurons season comes to an end

The Rogers City Hurons softball team had their season come to an end with a 9-0 loss to Onaway in the district semifinals. Onaway was the visiting team in the contest and leadoff hitter Allie Nave reached on a walk and was later stranded on third base. The Hurons came to bat with Logan Schuiteman leading off with a walk. Sam Hall then sacrificed Schuiteman to second base. Katie Tulgestke then came to bat and hit a ground ball back to the pitcher who tried to throw out Schuiteman at third.

Schuiteman was safe at third and Tulgestke made it all the way to second to put runners on second and third with just one out. However, the Hurons did not score in the inning. Onaway catcher Sam Brasseur led off the second with a double and later scored when the Cardinals were successful on a couple of bunts. The Cardinals took an early 2-0 lead.

Rogers City senior Sara Carpenter led off the Huron half of the second with a single but was stranded on second base when the inning ended. Onaway was shut out in the third and fourth innings while the Hurons continued to try to push a run across. Schuiteman led off the third with a single, Hall sacrificed her to second and Tulgestke reached on a fielder?s choice to put runners on first and second with one out. Coach Karl Grambau then tried a double steal when Schuiteman was thrown out at third. The inning ended with no scoring for the Hurons.

Onaway added six runs in the fifth inning when they had bases loaded with two outs and Amanda Pomranke cleared the bases with a double to leftfield to make the score 5-0. Molly Cleaver then singled to score Pomranke before Brasseur stepped to the plate and hit a homerun over the left field fence to make the score 8-0. The Hurons had runners on base in each of the final three innings but were never able to score. The Cardinals added one more in the seventh. Rogers City managed just four hits in the game, two singles by Schuiteman and hits by Carpenter and Katie Darga.

Darga

took the loss for the Hurons allowing six runs on four hits and two walks while she struck out seven. Schuiteman came in for the final 2 1/3 innings giving up three runs on four hits while striking out three. ?The game was closer than the final score showed. We had chances to score and it was only 2-0 when the Cardinals broke it open in the fifth. Give Onaway credit, they are a great team and we wish them luck,? said coach Grambau. Rogers City finished the season with a record of 21-16 playing a tough schedule. The loss ended the careers of five seniors, Schuiteman, Tulgestke, Hall, Carpenter and Greta Grambau.

LAST THURSDAY the Hurons ended the regular season with a split with Alpena at home. Rogers City dropped game one 8-2. Darga took the loss. Hall and Emily Marx who each had a double, Nikkie LaLonde with a triple and Carpenter and Darga each singled to lead Rogers City offensively. Rogers City won game two 6-2. Darga started the game but was relieved by Schuiteman in the first inning. Schuiteman and LaLonde each had two hits while Hall, Marx, Darga and Grambau each added a hit.
