Team splits at Soo, hosts Onaway today
Rogers City and Sault Ste. Marie split a pair of games Tuesday in the Upper Peninsula with the Hurons taking game one and Soo winning the second game. Senior righthander Tyler Szumila benefited from a four-run sixth inning in a 7-4 win. Szumila went all six innings, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out five and walking none. The Hurons had 11 hits with two each coming from Szumila, Jesse Wilbert, Pat Quaine and Sidney Marx.
The Soo took advantage of Huron errors in a 15-6 win in game two. Four Huron errors led to nine unearned runs in a 10-run fourth inning for Sault Ste. Marie. Ben Tulgestke started, going the first three innings. He allowed nine runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out two. Zack Sobeck pitched one-third of an inning, allowing four walks. Jared Delekta pitched two and two-thirds of an inning allowing three hits and no runs. Marx had three hits while Tulgestke and Szumila had two hits each. ?Usually I would be disappointed after we lost three games, but not this time. I thought we played very well against some really good teams,? said coach Howard Madsen about last weekend?s tournament in Alpena.
Rogers City, which plays in Division 4 for the state tournament, faced three Division 1 teams in Alpena, Gross Pointe North and Escanaba and lost competitive games with each. Rogers City lost 7-3 to Gross Pointe North in
Tulgestke started, working the first five innings and Alex Lemmon pitched the last two. Levi Ellenberger had two singles for the Hurons while Tulgestke added two hits and a walk. A tough Escanaba squad topped Rogers City 3-0 in the third game of the tournament. The Eskimos scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings of the tight game. Jozwiak allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out a pair of Escanaba hitters. Rogers City had five hits, but couldn?t push a run across the plate. The best threat came in the first when Tulgestke and Szumila started off with singles and Wilbert walked. But three straight hitters went down to end the rally for the Hurons. Pat Quaine led off the seventh with a double but was stranded at third base as the inning ended. Rogers City hosts Onaway today (Thursday) and plays at a tournament in Bellaire Saturday before playing at Cheboygan Tuesday.
