Hurons take two from Newberry to improve to 13-8 on the season

A perfect day for baseball proved to be a perfect day for two Huron wins in the Upper Peninsula. Rogers City won game one 8-4 and took game two 8-6. With the score tied 4-4 after four innings, the Hurons came up with four runs in the top of the fifth to earn the win. In the Huron first inning, Tyler Szumila singled and moved to second on a walk to Jesse Wilbert. Matt Mertz had an RBI single and Pat Quaine ended the three-run inning with a double.

Mertz and Quaine each had RBI hits in the third and Quaine added another RBI double in the four-run fifth inning. Fleis capped the inning with an RBI single. Szumila had three hits with a single, double and triple. JUNIOR ALEX Jozwiak pitched six innings, striking out six with two walks. The Hurons had 13 hits in the game. Jozwiak started game two, working the first four innings and allowing three hits and two walks while striking out two. He left with an 8-0 lead.

Another four-run inning, this time coming in the Huron third, keyed the win. Ben Tulgestke singled and Szumila followed with a single. Wilbert?s single scored two runs. After Wilbert moved to third base, he scored on Quaine?s groundout. Rogers City had nine hits in support of Jozwiak who earned the win in game two. Sophomore Austin Brege, getting his first varsity action, pitched one and one-third and Alex Lemmon pitched one-third. Coach Howard Madsen brought in Szumila to put out the fire in a five-run Newberry sixth.

Last Thursday?s game with Posen were rained out. The varsity hosts Rudyard for a doubleheader today and then plays at the Glen Lake tournament Saturday. The final regular season game on the schedule is May 27 when the Hurons host Alcona. COACH WAYNE Karsten?s junior varsity ended its season on a high note, winning a tournament in Oscoda Saturday. Rogers City blasted Whittemore-Prescott (W-P) 12-1 in a six-hit attack, aided by four W-P errors. The Hurons scored three runs in the first, five in the second and capped it with four more in the fifth inning.

Dylan Orr had two hits for Rogers City. Chad Karsten started an

d got the win. He pitched two innings, allowed one hit and struck out four. Chris Peacock went the final three innings. He gave up five hits and struck out six. The bats were smoking for the Hurons in the championship game. Rogers City blew out Oscoda 18-6. The Hurons had 18 runs on 14 hits and committed five errors. Oscoda had six runs on two hits with four errors. With the game tied at 3-3, Rogers City exploded for 12 runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth. Lance Schaedig had three hits for Rogers City. Chase Grulke had three hits with six RBIs and Evan Lamb added four hits in the contest.

Karsten pitched three innings and allowed three runs on two hits. Peacock finished the last two innings, surrendering three runs, all unearned, while striking out four men. The junior varsity ended its season at 10-6.
