Sprinting to a new standard, Hentkowski breaks 10-year record

It was a race into the record books, in one of the sport?s most high-profile events. Posen High School junior Corey Hentkowski, a state qualifying long jumper, was clocked at 10.80 seconds in the 100-meter dash when he went against county counterparts at last Wednesday?s annual Presque Isle Championships in Posen. When the gun fired, Hentkowski pulled out of the blocks cleanly and went out in front several strides into the race, and crossed the line with a comfortable lead. HENTKOWSKI CAME close a year ago to breaking the 10-year-old record held by David Bruning (11.1), but it was against arguably the best sprinter in the area.

Hentkowski also was first in the long jump (18? 8 ??) and the 200-meter dash (23.96) on the home turf. The boys took third at the meet with 96 points. Onaway was first with 217 points, while Rogers City had 116. The girls were third with 58 points. Onaway was first with 231 points, while Rogers City was in second with 107.

Scoring points for the Posen boys were: The 3,200-meter relay team of David Kerr, Lucas Litwinski, Warren Beach and Martin Mulka took second with a time of 9:53.50. Kerr also took second in the 400-meter dash (57.43), third in the 100-meter (11.80) and third in the 200-meter (24.39). BEACH LEGGED out a second-place position in the 3,200-meter (11:33.01). Third place finishers follow: discus, Mike Metivier, 95? 2?; 110-meter high hurdles, 21.194; throwers relay, Hentkowski, Mark Jakey, Eric Rice and Litwinski, 58.93. Tracy Mulka had the highest placing for the girls with a second in the discus at 86?. AT THE Mio Invitational last Friday, the boys took sixth place (34 points) out of the nine schools participating, while the girls were seventh (14 points). Wozniak said the girls? squad was nursing various injuries and were missing several athletes. To make the team more competitive the rest of the season, he?ll be using eighth-graders Katie Stowe, Korynn Hincka, Austin Sharpe and Bev Bednarski. Some of the top placers for the girls at Mio were: discus, 2nd, Mulka, 76? 5?; throwers relay, third, Mulka, Julia Lewandowski, Rauls, Wisniewski, 1:16.40; shot put, Rauls, 21? 1?, personal record (PR).
