Posen girls’ basketball off to good start in ’10

by Peter Jakey, Managing Editor

The Viking girls? basketball has come out of the Christmas break playing pretty well and are one play from being 3-0 in 2010. They won back-to-back games against Hale (54-29) last Friday and Atlanta (58-13) on Tuesday, and almost nipped Cedarville at their place. The final score in the Upper Peninsula was 52-51. Posen (4-5, 3-3) hosts Hillman tomorrow (Friday) and Rogers City Monday. The Vikings got off to a 17-2 start at Atlanta and never looked back. The halftime score was 33-8. The girls, again, came out with some tight ?D? in the third, allowing only one point. The third quarter score was 13-1.

?Full-court pressure wore down Atlanta,? said head coach Karl Momrik. ?They are an undermanned squad with only six kids. It was a good performance.? There were only nine turnovers in the contest. The six guards on the squad only gave up the ball three times. ?WE WERE happy with guard play,? said Momrik. ?Now, we are facing a big Friday sh

owdown against Hillman. Hillman only has one league loss.? It?s also a team the Vikings might lock horns with in the post season.

Lindsay Ponik had 13 against Atlanta, while Janice Ciarkowski put in 12. The score at the half was close against Hale, 25-18, but a 22-2 third by the Vikes tilted the scoreboard in Posen?s favor. Anna Couture had a team-high 10 and was followed by LeAnn Strzelecki with nine. Ciarkowski and Korynn Hincka both had eight each. The Vikings dug themselves out of an early hole at Cedarville, Jan. 6, to tie the score at 35 and had possession of the ball with the score tied at 51.

Hincka rebounded with 12.9 seconds to go, and while setting up a play, ?a pass was stolen and we fouled at the buzzer. Cedarville made a free throw and won the game.? The junior varsity defeated Cedarville (41-23) and Hale (48-42). Atlanta doesn?t have a J.V. Their record is 7-1 and 4-1.
