Lewandowski earns academic all-state; Huron football team 11th in D-7

The Rogers City High School football team and an individual player received honors recently, and not for effort on the football field. The team, which qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association playoffs under coach Mike Kosiara, earned recognition for work in the classroom.

The team earned 11th place in Division 7 and senior running back and linebacker David Lewandowski earned first team academic all state in D-7. Lewandowski joined 23 others in making the prestigious list. David is the son of Fred and Lori Lewandowski. He recovered from a season-ending injury in his junior year to become the team?s leading rusher as a senior. Of the 24 members on the first team, 18 were ranked first in their class. Of the 153 nominees, 43 were ranked first in their class.

The average grade point average (GPA) for the first team was 3.988 on a four-point scale. Rogers City?s top 11 student-athletes had a GPA of 3.516 to place 11th. Traverse City St. Francis had the best score at 3.930. The top four teams in each division receive plaques honoring their achievements as academic all-state teams.
