It took the Huron girls 21 games to win three games last season. After wins over Onaway, Alcona and Hillman, the 2009-2010 Hurons stand at 4-0. ?I think the difference is what they are doing with their offensive possessions,? said first-year coach Emily McLean of the team?s sudden success. ?We are taking good shots and moving the ball. It is all experience and their confidence level.?

It took the Hurons nearly four minutes to get on the scoreboard to open Tuesday?s game against the Hillman Tigers. Greta Grambau started the scoring off with a three-pointer from the corner to give the Hurons a 3-2 lead with 4:33 showing on the clock in the first quarter. A pressing defense from both sides caused many turnovers as the quarter ended with the Hurons leading 8-6.

ROGERS CITY TOOK the lead for good on another jumper from Grambau, this time after the Hurons moved the ball around the perimeter until the senior guard found an opening for a short jumper. That started a 15-0 Huron run to end the second quarter. Senior guard Sam Hall drained 3 three-pointers, set up Logan Schuiteman for a hoop inside with a nice pass, and Amanda Lenard nailed two free throws in the run.

The Tigers, who lost leader Maci Shook to an injury early in the first quarter, struggled to find an offense against the pressing Hurons in the first half. But in the third quarter, Hillman made a 9-0 run to cut the Huron lead to to 38-20. Grambau stopped the run with a steal by hitting an open jumper with four minutes left in the third quarter.

Hillman cut the lead to 30-24 with 2:39 left in the third quarter, but the Hurons closed out the frame with an 11-0 run to lead 41-24 after three. Rogers City was not challenged the rest of the way. Grambau?s 15 points paced the Hurons while Schuiteman added 11 and Lenard scored six.

The game marked the return of senior point guard Katie Tulgestke, who missed all of last season with a knee injury. She played well in a reserve role for the Hurons. THE HURONS made it 3-0 with another come-from-behind win at Alcona Friday. Rogers City trailed 15-10 after the first quarter and 23-15 at halftime before mounting a rally. They led 31-30 heading into the fourth quarter and increased that to a 44-36 final margin.

Grambau led the team with 14 points while Schuiteman added 13. Lenard and Hall added 7 points each. Rogers City rallied from a 10-point, third-quarter deficit to take a 57-52 win over Onaway Dec. 2. Sam Hall hit six three-pointers, leading the way with 23 points. Trailing by as many as 12 points in the game, the Hurons kept chiseling away at the Cardinal lead, taking a brief lead at 51-50 on a Logan Schuiteman free throw with 3:09 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Onaway got the ball and the lead back, but then Hall?s three-pointer with 55 seconds left in the game put the Hurons up 54-52. COACH KARL Grambau?s junior varsity Hurons improved to 3-1 with a 27-17 win over Hillman. A lid seemed to be on both baskets as the teams had many open shots that just wouldn?t fall.

Hillman led 7-5 after the first quarter and 12-11 at halftime. Rogers City took the lead at 17-15 after the third quarter and limited the Tigers to 2 points in the fourth quarter. Becky Talaske led the team with 6 points while Kelleigh Lamb and Lindsey Claus each scored 4. Nine p

layers scored for Rogers City.

The JV took a comfortable 43-25 win over Alcona Friday. Rogers City took command in the second quarter, breaking out to a 20-15 halftime lead and never trailed the rest of the way. Lalonde scored 15 points while Claus and Talaske added eight points each. Onaway won a low-scoring 22-21 affair last week in a game in which each team played hard defensively. Onaway led 4-2 after the first quarter and 11-10 at halftime. A late bucket by the Cards gave them the winning margin, after Rogers City took a brief lead. Lalonde and Amanda Smolinski each scored 6 points in the contest.

The junior varsity plays Sault Ste. Marie Thursday at 6 p.m., followed by the boys? junior varsity contest between Rogers City and the Soo. Both the boys? and girls? varsity teams are in action Friday at Sault Ste. Marie. The girls are off until they host St. Ignace Dec. 18 in the last game before the Christmas break.
