Sportsman’s show expected to attract crowds this weekend

Saturday and Sunday at the Onaway High School vendors will be on hand with products and displays for every sportsman as the Onaway Sportsman?s Show has arrived.

From 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday vendors with both products and displays, food, door prizes, the Onaway Woodcarvers, a kid?s fishing pond run by the Hammond Bay Area Anglers and a hunter safety simulator by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will highlight the activities both days.

Thirty-three vendors have signed up for the event, and although that is a little down they are different vendors that should delight c

rowds. ?We are expecting big crowds, the weather has been nice, hunters are in the woods, people will be traveling for Thanksgiving, we are hoping to break last year?s attendance of 1,200,? said executive director of the Onaway Area Chamber of Commerce Bev Brougham.

The DNR also will be giving hunter safety talks every hour and a chili cook-off will take place on Saturday with judging to begin at 12:30 p.m. Participants in the cook-off had to be registered by Nov. 23 and will be cooking for prizes in four different categories; traditional, non-traditional, wild game and youth cooks who are 18 or younger.

The Onaway Area Chamber of Commerce took over the Sportsman?s Show last year after the Presque Isle County Tourism Council evaporated. The show used to be a staple of activity in the area as it was a big event packed with people.
