Crew of the Carl D. Bradley to be remembered

by Angie Asam, Staff Writer

Last year at this time Rogers City was a buzz of activity as the 50th anniversary commemoration of the sinking of the Carl D. Bradley had events going every day of the week in different locations. The Bradley sank on Nov. 18, 1958 in Lake Michigan and took with her the lives of 33 crewmen, 23 of them whom called Rogers City home. The Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum will hold a bell-tolling ceremony Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Museum beginning at 2 p.m.

Last year marked the first time that the recovered bell from the Bradley was rung since the ship sank. The bell was recovered by a dive team in August of 2007, this year that bell again will be the one used for the bell ringing ceremony. The bell was replaced with a commemorative bell engraved with the names of those who were on the ship that tragic day.

Museum director Dave Erickson will give a brief history of the ship before the names are read and the bell is tolled once for each of them. All are encouraged to attend and enjoy the museum following the ceremony. Bell ringers are needed for the ceremony, anyone with questions can contact the museum at (989) 734-0706.
