Vikings take undefeated NSL record into Mio

by Peter Jakey– Managing Editor Posen won its ninth consecutive North Star League (NSL) match Tuesday at Twining, sweeping the host Arenac Eastern Eagles, 25-14, 9, 12. It sets up a road showdown with Mio tonight, a school with only one league loss, and that?s to Posen (9-0 NSL). The Vikings lost the first game to the Thunderbolts, September 15 at home, but took the final three. Mio is the only team close to Posen in the conference standings. Hillman is in Posen this Tuesday. In between, the Vikings will be at the Rogers City Tournament Saturday. Leanne Buczkowski had eight kills against Arenac, while Janice Ciarkowski had six and Lindsey Bartz had five. Lindsay Ponik came through with seven aces and 13 assists.

LAST SATURDAY, the Vikes were first in pool play at the Mackinac Island Tournament, but lost to Beaver Island in the semifinals. The girls started the day with a split against Mackinac Island and then defeated Vanderbilt and Alanson. Beaver Island won all three games. ?It was a real illustration of some of the weaknesses we have,? said head coach John Dietlin. ?We?ve been able to overcome them at all junctures of the season so far. They realized that they can?t just flip the switch whenever they want. It doesn?t work that way.? The Vikings overall record is 11-1-1. After the Hillman match, there are three league tilts left against Atlanta, Au Gres and Fairview. Only the Au Gres match is at home, October 27.
