Three Huron runners earn all-conference honors

Senior Greta Grambau and sophomores Sierra Centala and Joey Sobeck earned all Straits Area Conference honors in cross country last week. Grambau earned first-team honors placing seventh while Centala (16th) and Sobeck (17th) earned second-team honors. Saturday the Hurons traveled to Rudyard for the 15th Annual Bulldog Classic. The girls? team placed second in the nine-team invitational led by Grambau who placed eighth at 21:17. Centala was 12th at 22:18 and other finishers were Bailey Andrzejewski 15th (23:00), Jami Horn 22nd (23:38) and Leilani Kortman 23rd (24:12).

The Huron boys? team took fifth place led by Sobeck who was 20th at 18:57. Paul Wilbert 21st (19:00), Vinny Szczerowski 31st (20:44), Vincent Kuznicki 37th (23:44) and Domnic Krawczak 38th (24:12) rounded out the Huron finishers. TUESDAY THE TEAMS traveled to Rudyard for the final Straits Area Conference meet of the season. Both teams placed seventh in the meet. Girls results were Grambau 7th (21:07), Centala 20th (22:56), Andrzejewski 21st (23:23) and Kortman 44th (25:08). Boys results were Sobeck 21st (19:06), Wilbert 22nd (19:10), Szczerowski 45th (20:45), Derry 50th (21:02), Kuznicki 62nd (23:05) and Krawczak 67th (23:44).

Final team standings in the conference for the Hurons were the girls finishing seventh and the boys in fifth.

IN MIDDLE SCHOOL action the teams wrapped up their season Saturday at Rudyard. ?It has been a fun year with the young runners. They worked hard and improved greatly over the course of the season,? said coach Rob Kortman. Placing at the Bulldog Classic for the middle school girls were Amber Nowicki 3rd (14:03), Brooke Dubie 9th (14:52), Kaitlyn Bruning 14th (15:00), Torri Delekta 21st (15:32), Alysse Hempel 23rd (15:35), Ryley Schalk 24th (15:50), Amber Pilarski 28th (16:05), Sami Bober 39th (16:50) and Jenny Guenterberg 40th (16:53). For the middle school boys Colton Fessler was third at 12:30 and Shawn Roby was 15th at 13:50.

Tuesday

in the final conference race, middle school results were Fessler 3rd (12:50), Roby 20th (13:59), Nowicki 2nd (13:31), Hempel 19th (15:05), Bruning 20th (15:09), Dubie 24th (15:33), Delekta 25th (15:35), Pilarski 29th (15:46), Bober 31st (15:49), Schalk 41st (16:54), Guenterberg 46th (17:14) and Jacky Hart 49th (17:29). The middle school girls? team finished second in the final conference standings while the boys? team was fifth. Earning all conference honors were Nowicki (first team ? fourth), Hempel (second team ? 12th), Bruning (second team ? 18th), Fessler (first team ? third) and Roby (second team ? 16th).

The Hurons will be at Inland Lakes Saturday and at Gaylord Tuesday before regionals on October 30 in Ellsworth at 4 p.m.
