Cross Country teams have two meets left

by Angie Asam– Staff Writer With meets Tuesday and Saturday in Rudyard the Rogers City cross country teams will wrap up the regular season and gear up for regionals in Ellsworth on October 30 at 4 p.m. Despite cold and wet weather conditions throughout the last week, the Huron teams have continued to run well. Saturday the Hurons traveled to Sault Ste. Marie for the 12-school Elks Invitational where both teams finished in eighth place. Senior Greta Grambau finished the course in 21:55 to take 23rd place leading the girls? team. Other runners were Sierra Centala 35th (22:50), Bailey Andrzejewski 41st (24:02), Leilani Krotman 46th (24:23) and Jami Horn 49th (24:43). Leading the boys? team with a 24th place finish at 18:53 was sophomore Joey Sobeck. Other runners were Paul Wilbert 38th (19:50), Andy Derry 46th (20:36), Vinny Szczerowski 55th (21:24), Vincent Kuznicki 57th (23:39) and Domnic Krawczak 60th (24:42).

?We continue to improve with each race which we need to do in order to get out of regionals and off to Brooklyn,? said coach Rob Kortman. LAST TUESDAY IN PICKFORD for the third Straits Area Conference (SAC) jamboree the girls? team placed seventh while the boys were fifth. ?The weather was cold and rainy with a strong cross-wind, there was even a hint of snow in the air. It made the homecoming football game look like a sprinkling. The course in Pickford was on a golf course and became soft as the race went on. It makes me proud that all the runners put up good times and improved their places in the conference; it takes a lot of grit to run when you are wet to the bone and cold,? said coach Kortman. Placing for the boys were Sobeck 19th (19:37), Wilbert 22nd (19:43), Szczerowski 33rd (20:42), Derry 40th (21:32), Kuznicki 63rd (24:32) and Krawczak 67th (25:05). Huron runners for the girls were Grambau 8th (21:49), Centala 19th (23:10), Andrzejewski 24th (23:33) and Kortman 34th (24:41).

Headed into the final SAC meet of the season Tuesday at Rudyard, the Huron girls team was in fifth place while the boys were in seventh. The top 20 individuals will receive all-conference awards. Girls team members and their ranks are; Grambau 7th, Centala 16th, Andrzejewski 28th, Kortman

34th, Horn 46th and Mariah Lloyd 65th. Boys rankings are Sobeck 17th, Wilbert 23rd, Derry 37th, Szczerowski 48th, Kuznicki 68th and Krawczak 84th. IN MIDDLE SCHOOL ACTION over the last week, the team finished third at the Sault invitational, scored as a co-ed team. Runners for the girls? team were Amber Nowicki 3rd (13:24), Brooke Dubie 11th (14:28), Kaitlyn Bruning 16th (14:45), Alysse Hempel 19th (14:55), Jenny Guenterburg 26th (15:19), Torri Delekta 29th (15:30), Amber Pilarski 30th (15:34) and Ryley Schalk 32nd (15:42). For the boys team Colton Fessler was third at 12:10 and Shawn Roby was 20th at 13:25.

In the SAC meet at Pickford, the girls were second while the boys were fifth. Runners and their respective times and places were; Nowicki 4th (14:56), Dubie 17th (16:25), Hempel 20th (16:26), Delekta 21st (16:28), Bruning 23rd (16:33), Pilarski (26th 16:39), Schalk 33rd (17:21), Sami Bober 38th (17:23), Jacky Hard 37th (17:24) and Guenterburg 39th (17:24). In the boys? race Fessler was fifth at 13:23 and Roby 20th at 15:12. The Hurons traveled to Rudyard Tuesday for the final SAC meet of the season and will make a return trip to Rudyard Saturday for the Bulldog Classic. Those two races will wrap up the season for the runners as they will compete in regionals October 30 in Ellsworth.
