Advance wins award for ‘We Remember’

Members of the Iowa Press Association studied thousands of entries submitted by Michigan newspapers when they judged the 2009 Michigan Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.

Judges selected the publication ?We Remember? as the top ?special section? for the year in the weekly newspaper category. The 28-page special section on the sinking of the Carl D. Bradley featured a retelling of the tragedy, as covered in the Presque Isle County Advance in November, 1958, and many original contributions.

The judges said the special section offered ?excellent coverage of an historic event.? ?The old newspaper stories and old photos were mixed wonderfully with news of the ship today. Design and layout of this special section were excellent. Very nice work,? the judges said.

?I am proud of the dedicated staff who take pride in the weekly newspaper and special sections that we do,? said publisher Richard Lamb. ?Doing this special section is just another way recording the events of the area and preserving history in the pages of our publications?something we do each week in our newspapers. I am happy that advertisers stepped up to the plate to support this special project.?

In addition to historical photos provided by the Presque Isle County Historical Museum, and articles from previous editions and by managing editor Peter Jakey, contributing writers included TV 7 & 4 chief meteorologist Greg MacMaster, former Advance publisher Harry H. Whiteley and noted author Michael Schumacher who graciously allowed u

se of a long excerpt from his book ?Wreck of the Carl D.? The Presque Isle County Advance has won first place awards in recent years for sports coverage, sports photos, general excellence, news coverage, columnists, breaking news, and design.

Newspaper of the year honors went to Detroit Free Press, Kalamazoo Gazette, Traverse City Record-Eagle, and Ludington Daily News in the weekly category. Winning newspaper of the year in the weekly category were New-Herald of Southgate, Grosse Pointe News, Leelanau Enterprise, and State Line Observer. The results were announced as part of National Newspaper Week.
