Cardinal volleyball team stays perfect in Ski Valley play

The Onaway High School varsity volleyball team improved to 3-0 in the Ski Valley Conference (10-7 overall) when it swept visiting Inland Lakes, 25-20, 25-19, and 25-22.

?We didn?t play our best match of the season, but defeating good competition despite not playing our best is a good sign for this team,? said coach Steve Watson.

Lindsay Self recorded 12 kills, an ace, 11 digs, and a block in the match, while Allie Nave recorded three kills, 26 assists, five aces, 11 digs, and a block. Nicki Olree chipped in with five kills and five digs, while Amanda Pomranke served three aces, and recorded four kills and 10 digs in the victory.

Last Saturday, the Cardinals participated in the competitive, 10-team Petoskey Invite. In pool play, OHS defeated Harbor Springs, 22-20 and 21-16, and Boyne City, 21-18 and 21-18.

Onaway then defeated Harbor Light, 17-21, 21-17, and 15-9, before falling to Petoskey, 12-21 and 13-21. The 3-1 effort placed the Cards second in their pool. In bracket play, the Red Birds took on Charlevoix, which won the other

pool, and the Rayders came out on top, 20-25 and 25-27. The loss dropped Onaway into the match for third, which it lost to Pellston, 21-25 and 25-27.

?The girls played well against some excellent competition,? said Watson. ?This was the first time we?d advanced to bracket play in this tourney, and we were right there in the end with both Charlevoix and Pellston.?

Nave had 13 kills, 75 assists, five aces, 23 digs, and two blocks, Pomranke had 28 kills, 12 aces, and 60 digs, Self had 20 kills, nine aces, 42 digs, and three blocks, and Payton Lupu had 14 kills, four aces, two digs, and four blocks.

The volleyball team returns to action Tuesday at perennial SVC power Forest Area, looking to avenge a five-set loss in 2008 (OHS defeated the Warriors in five sets in 2007).
