Hurons win football opener, 26-20 over Hillman

Rogers City’s senior quarterback Pat Quaine threw for two touchdowns, ran for two more and made a late interception in a 26-20 win over Hillman Friday.

As important as the four offensive TDs were in the Huron win, his interception in his own end zone with 1:24 left in the game played just as big a part in the Huron win.

That ended a Hillman drive and the Hurons ran out the clock from there.

Hillman scored first in the game on an opening drive that ended at the 7:14 mark.

The Hurons answered, sparked by an interception by senior cornerback Brandon Haneckow, setting up Quaine’s three-yard keeper. A penalty on the point-after nullified Jessie Wilbert’s perfect kick and the second attempt, from five yards further away, fell short. The score was tied at 6-6 with 1:55 left in the game.

With 4:27 left in the first half, Quaine scrambled out of a jam and found Haneckow alone at midfield with the result an 87-yard touchdown play. The wideout took the pass and scampered down the l

eft sideline for the second Huron TD and a 12-6 lead.

Moved this year to tight end from wide receiver, Ben Tulgestke proved he still has break-away speed from that position. He took a look-in pass from Quaine and sped 51 yards for the third Huron TD.

Hillman answered quickly with a TD 24 seconds later to make the score 20-14 at halftime. Then the Tigers tied the game at 20-20 with the first score of the second half, coming on a 15-yard pass with 6:47 left in the quarter.

A roughing the passer on a failed fourth down play kept the game-winning drive alive. Quaine’s two-yard run proved the winner.

Rogers City is off next week after the game with Posen was cancelled. Posen’s lack of players forced the team to schedule eight-man games against a schedule which is still incomplete.
