The Rogers City varsity volleyball team had their first action of the season Saturday at the Sault Ste. Marie tournament. The Hurons would not win a match on the day but earned two splits while dropping four matches. ?We started out looking pretty together but as we played the next few matches we lost confidence and made many passing errors which made it very hard to run anything on the net,? said coach Kristy Smolinski. Up against the hosting Blue Devils, the Hurons fell by scores of 14-21 and 8-21. Next up was Cedarville and the Hurons dropped the first game 13-21 before winning game two 21-14.

The Hurons then faced the Rudyard Bulldogs and won game one 23-21 before dropping game two 16-21. The team then fell to St. Ignace (14-21, 16-21), Petoskey (3-21, 7-21) and Houghton (14-21 and 12-21). ?I am trying to figure out the best six for the floor and where everyone will work well together

and individually. I made changes throughout the day and ended on a strong formation that gave Houghton a run for their money. We played them very well and were able to run some good, quick plays that brought a few smiles to the team and fans,? said coach Smolinski.

For the day senior Logan Schuiteman had 37 digs, 16 serves and 9 kills. Sophomore Amanda Smolinski had 18 digs, 25 serves and 9 kills. Katie Tulgestke had 22 serves and 104 set assists. Becca Peacock ended the day with 13 blocks and 6 kills while Leann Knopf added 13 blocks and Liz Atkins added 15 digs. Rachel Lewandowski added 73 set assists.

?We have a lot of work to do on passing and blocking before we play Alpena on Thursday (today) and off to the Inland Lakes Invitational this weekend,? said coach Smolinski. The Hurons first home action will be on Tuesday, September 15 against Alcona. Action will begin at 6 p.m. with the junior varsity contest and the varsity match will follow.
