Festival week begins

THE TRADITIONAL start to the Nautical City Festival came Tuesday with the Sailors? Memorial observance at Lakeside Park. As master of ceremonies Art Ross looks on, Captain Dick Peacock read the names of those lost aboard the Carl D. Bradley in 1958 while survivor Frank Mays rang a ceremonial bell. Later, Cedarville survivor Dave Erickson rang the bell in honor of his shipmates. Other retired sailors participating onstage were Captain Norman Quaine, Captain John Szczerowski, Captain Roger Hein, Chief Jerry Badgero, Chief Robert Centala, Chief Duane Rickle, Chief Charlie Horn, Captain Ron Lewandowski, Captain Paul Dubbs and First Mate Leonard Flewelling. Coast Guard Chaplin Ryan Rupe gave the address while Commander Leonard LaTulip led the color guard from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 607. The Rogers City Kiwanis Club sang a hymn with Miss Rogers City, Julie LaBar and her court. (Photos by Richard Lamb)
