Ninth annual tractor show to be held in new arena

by Peter Jakey, Managing Editor

For the first time ever, the Onaway Antique Tractor Show has a home it can call its own. Their new arena was constructed along M-211, two miles north of the Onaway city limits.

It consists of a pulling track area bordered by metal guardrails that can be lighted when the sun goes down, an elevated announcer?s booth, three sets of bleachers, as well as agriculture machinery permanently dotting the property.

There also is a large sandbox, perfectly placed behind the main set of bleachers, so parents can keep on eye on their children as they play.

The entrance is off of Twin School Highway. The show had previously been held at Amy?s Arena east of Onaway.

?IT HAS been a lot of work, a lot of volunteer time went into it,? said Kelli Stockwell, treasurer. The Tip of Mitt Antique Tractor Association sponsors the ninth annual show. Friday night t

he tractor pull will begin the weekend at 7 p.m. The next day, after the parade, the pig roast runs noon to 1 p.m. and is followed by the draft horse pull.

?I talked with a gentleman from Alpena this morning and he said we should have more heavyweight teams this year,? said Stockwell. ?He?s had a lot of people calling expressing interest.?

Sunday morning there will be gospel music at 9:15 a.m., tractor games at 10:30 a.m. and the first ever auction at 2:30 p.m.

There will be a variety of agriculture demonstrations throughout the weekend. Gates open at 9 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

The red International is the featured tractor this year.
