Millersburg Eagles show heartwarming outreach during time of need

The membership of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles has reached out to the people beyond the friendly confines of their own four walls.

Raising $400 from a bake sale doesn?t sound like a lot, but when it is combined with the heartwarming donations of other items, there?s no way of measuring the value of helping others during these tough times.

And that?s exactly what members of the civic-minded organization have done this summer.

?Everybody remembers the winter time, but with so many people not going out on the boats this year, and a lot of people not working, we decided it would be nice to do something for the food pantries — just to help the community,? said event coordinator Angie Carper.

The pantries are located at Onaway Assembly of God Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church of Rogers City.

The organization conducted its bake sale June 20, with all the money being used to purchase food.

ALONG WITH the bake sale was a food drive among members. They shopped for items at

Sav-A-Lot of Gaylord and Alpena. The Gaylord store stepped up and added something extra by donating a case of toilet paper and a case of dish soap.

July 15 was the date representatives of the food pantries from Onaway and Rogers City were to pick up the boxes of goods. They were stacked high on the Eagles? lone pool table. ?We have had a large increase in the number of people coming,? said Beth Getzinger of Westminster Church. ?We appreciate everything that the Eagles have done.? She said the food pantry was a little sparse earlier that day as there were a number of people picking up items that morning.

?We have been getting a lot of monetary donations, too,? she said. ?You would think in this economy that people wouldn?t be so generous, but they are.?
