Vikings return to .500 after sweep of Arenac Eastern

The Posen baseball team swept Arenac Eastern and Fairview in doubleheader action, three games of which were mercy-shortened, and went 1-1 at the Pickford tournament. It gets the Vikings back to a .500 record at 9-9 overall. They improved to 6-2 in the North Star League and remain in second place behind Hillman, who has only one loss. “I’m looking forward to the rest of the season and believe we can compete,” said head coach Pat Kowalski. “We have to eliminate the mental mistakes.”

There are three doubleheaders over the next five days, and all are home games. Rogers City visits the County League Field today; the Posen tournament, with Onaway, Inland Lakes and Superior Central, is Saturday; and Au Gres makes the trip north Monday afternoon.

Posen blasted Fairview in action Monday at home, 19-3 in three innings and 15-2 in five innings. SHANE HENTKOWSKI improved his record to 3-2 overall with the win in game one (3 IN, 2 H, 2 ER, 5 W, 6 K’s). Scott Couture notched the victory in game two (3 IN, 2 H, 0 R, 1 W, 3 K’s). He also improved his pitching record to 3-2.

Aaron Romel got some work on the mound in game two, pitching two innings, 0allowing one hit, while walking three and striking out three. Justin LaPointe was 2-for-3 (2 RBI, 2B), while Tyson Klecha was 2-for-2 (RBI) in game two. The games in Pickford were not on the original schedule. Kowalski accepted the offer to play last week when a team dropped out. The Vikes knocked off Vand

erbilt in their first contest, 12-1, with Jerome Ciarkowski improving his pitching record to 2-0. The bats were lively, as the boys banged out 13 hits. LaPointe was 3-for-3 with two, two-run homers. He now has three on the season. Hentkowski was 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBI.

LAST THURSDAY, Posen made quick work of Arenac, 12-4 and 11-1. Hentkowski struck out eight and allowed two hits to get his second win. Brandon Beach had his best game of the season with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate, including an opposite field homer. Couture was the winner in game two (3 IN, 3 H, 1 R, 4 K’s).

In Saturday’s tournament, Onaway and Superior Central square off at 10 a.m., while Posen gets Inland Lakes at noon. The consolation game is at 2 p.m. and the championship game is tentatively set for 4 p.m.
