OHS? best and brightest shine on ?Awards Night?

Teachers, family and friends, and most importantly, Onaway High School?s (OHS) most gifted students gathered in the school cafetorium for the annual ?Awards Night? event. Academic honor roll medals were awarded to students from all four classes, educational award were presented and scholarships were publicly announced for the first time. In addition, for the second year in a row teachers gave out departmental awards in conjunction with the event.

The freshmen class had the largest group of recipients at 27. The seniors, who had their last official day of school yesterday (Thursday), had 15. Senior exhibitions are this afternoon (Friday). The sophomores had 22, while the juniors topped out at 25.

Superintendent Bob Szymoniak honored valedictorian Hailey Kimball, salutatorian Alysa Olree and honor student Evan Moreau.

?THIS YEAR?S valedictorian has been nothing but impressive during her high school years,? said Szymoniak. ?With an extremely strong intellect and capacity for thoughtful debate, she plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University.? She has been accepted into the honors program and has earned full tuition through the president?s scholarship, planning to study pre-law in the fall. Her grade point average (GPA) is 4.00.?I would advise none of us to g

et into trouble as her ultimate ambition is to be a prosecuting attorney, and knowing Hailey, we wouldn?t stand a chance,? he added.

Szymoniak said Olree was a ?smart? athlete and ?is a strong leader and excellent organizer, participating as a class officer and on student council her entire high school experience.? Her GPA is 3.99.

Moreau was described as ?a man of many athletic and academic talents.? In addition to many sports, including 14 years in hockey and soccer, he was captain of the Knowledge Bowl Team, during OHS? most successful season ever in the competition. Moreau has a GPA of 3.98.

Representatives of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5857 of Onaway and its Ladies Auxiliary served cake and refreshments.
