The Rogers City varsity softball team traveled to Rudyard Thursday and took two games from the Bulldogs to clinch at least a share of the Straits Area Conference Title with Cheboygan. Rogers City and Cheboygan split in their conference doubleheader a couple of weeks ago giving the Hurons a 9-1 record in the conference and a share of the title for the first time in four years. In game one the Hurons scored one run in the first inning, which Rudyard answered. The Hurons then scored twice in the second inning to again be answered by the Bulldogs making the score 3-3 to start the third inning.

Rogers City then scored one in the third, one in the fifth and five in the sixth while holding Rudyard to just one run in the sixth to win the game 10-4. Senior pitcher Sammi Brege earned the win as she gave up four runs on six hits and had seven strikeouts in six innings of work.

Rogers City managed only six hits but drew 11 walks and had two batters hit by a pitch in the contest. Junior shortstop Katie Tulgestke had two hits and an RBI, Sam Hall had a hit and two RBI and Katie Darga had a triple and an RBI. Logan Schuiteman added a hit and an RBI, Amanda Lenard had a hit and Sammi Brege notched a sacrifice fly to earn an RBI.

Schuiteman took to the mound in game two and gave up just three hits in six innings while striking out four en route to a 9-0 shutout victory for the Hurons. Offensively the Hurons scored nine runs on seven hits while drawing five walks. Emily Marx had a double and an RBI. Sara Carpenter, Greta Grambau and Katie Darga each had a hit and an RBI while Tulgestke, Linnea Brege and Sammi Brege each had a hit. Shelby Schleben also notched an RBI.

?The team earned the title because of their hard work and dedication. This has been a true team effort from day one and I am so happy for the girls. The conference championship was one of our goals and we earned it through hard work,? said coach Karl Grambau.

The Hurons are now 24-8 on the season and will host the Alpena Wildcats in one game Thursday beginning at 4:45. ?It will be nice to play Alpena on Thursday. It should help get us ready for the district tournament in Hillman on Saturday,? said coach Grambau. Saturday will be the much anticipated district tournament in Hillman. The district features the s

eventh-ranked Posen Vikings, tenth-ranked Onaway Cardinals, honorable mention Rogers City and Hillman. (Rankings as of May 18 according to www.mhssca.com)

Hillman will square off with Posen at 10 a.m. followed by the Hurons against the Onaway Cardinals. The winners will then square off for a chance to play in Rogers City in regional action on June 6. ?We have all had a lot of fun this season. These girls have worked very hard from the first practice right through the season. They deserve to have good things happen to them and we will be ready for the district tournament on Saturday,? said coach Grambau.

The Hurons have won three Saturday tournaments on the road this season and hope to add the district title Saturday. ?If we play up to our ability like we have been, we will be happy with the outcome. We are hosting regionals this year and we certainly hope to be playing in them on June 6,? said coach Grambau
