Two make SAC honorable mention for boys’ basketball

Senior Justin Idalski and junior Erik Meharg, who formed a potent guard tandem, were named to the honorable mention list of the Straits Area Conference (SAC) team. Idalski, a senior, led the team in scoring, by getting just two more points than Meharg (306 to 304) and saved his biggest game of the season for when the team needed it most. He scored 28 to lead the team to an upset over Hale in the district final game. Hale had come into the contest with only one loss, and as host of the final game, was favored by most to win.

?He was the vocal leader of the team,? said coach Tom Adrian. ?He was always picking everybody up.?

Meharg had an outstanding junior season averaging 12.67 points per game and connecting on 89 percent of his free throw attempts. The coach called Meharg a good ball handler and clutch performer.

Arik Hesselink, a junior from Rudyard, was named the SAC most valuable player. He scored 17.1 points per game and averaged 10 rebounds per contest. Other members of the first team SAC include Trevor Closs and Nick Hancock, both juniors; senior Chasten McKelvi, a senior from Rudyard; conference scoring leader junior Gerrit Mortenson of St. Ignace; and Jordan Spohn, a junior from Cheboygan.
