Commissioners approve purchase of mattresses for OOC

by Angie Asam, Staff Writer

The Ocqueoc Outdoor Center (OOC) is open for groups, organizations and all those interested during the months of June, July and August. This year so far 46 of the available 92 days are booked at the camp, leaving room for a few more users. Author Quest camps in June and August, 4-H camp and the Cheboygan Church of Christ have rented the camp already and plan to fill the facility to full capacity, which presented a problem.

Ten bunks in the camp were missing mattresses until Friday when the Presque Isle County board of commissioners approved the purchase of ten new mattresses from American Bedding Manufacturing Incorporated; the same company mattresses were purchased from previously. The total cost of the mattresses including shipping was $883.04, which will be paid for from the money coming into the camp as $1,000 has already come in for those renting the facility.

This year the Michigan State University (MSU) Extension office is handling the scheduling and oversight of the camp and have created an updated rental agreement, published a brochure and given the camp a presence on the Internet at www.msue.msu.edu/presqueisle. The website offers a copy of the rental agreement as well as the brochure.

Cheryl Peters, county extension director, also asked the board to consider delegating a commissioner to the OOC as it would give her someone to contact with small items regarding the camp as she works on scheduling and some oversight. The board appointed Kris Sorgenfrei to the job but commissioner Mike Darga offered to help in any way he could as well. Anyone interested in booking some time at the OOC should contact the MSU Extension office at (989) 734-2168.

IN OTHER COUNTY BOARD NEWS:

? The board unanimously adopted a resolution to change the 9-1-1 surcharge to 32 cents. The board had previously approved the 32 cents but the wording in the resolution read that the surcharge would continue to be 32 cents, however, the surcharge was only 31 cents previously. The board had to either change the number to 31 or the wording to indicate an increase.

? A corrections officer training fund was created by the board

to allow Sheriff Bob Paschke to put training money in a designated fund that will allow him to continue to use the money he collects longer than one fiscal year.

? The board opted not to appoint drain commissioner Charlie Lyon to the Ocqueoc River Watershed Commission. Lyon is currently serving as an advisor to the group. ?I have a problem with any more expense to that department, I think advisor is sufficient, if they want him on the board let them appoint him,? said commissioner Bob Schell.

? Brian Wagner was reappointed as the representative to the Presque Isle County Heritage Route Council.

? The 40 hour work week requested by the treasurers office and register of deeds office earlier this year has been extended until May 15 as the 90 day period is coming to an end and those offices still feel a need for the extra hours. The board will look at the numbers on what it is costing the county to allow this and will also look at the issue during budget time.
