Posen looks end Joborg’s run of perfection

Johannesburg-Lewiston (21-0), the No. 1 ranked Class D school in Michigan, is as good as advertised. So says Posen girls’ head coach Karl Momrik, who was scouting undefeated Cardinals on opening night of districts.

Joburg started their playoff run Monday night with a 14-0 run against Hillman. The tape of the national anthem hadn’t even been all the way rewound and Joburg had control of the game. They built a 14-0 advantage with only 1:19 of the game in the books.

“They seem to have a way of explodi

ng out of the gate. We are going to have to prevent them from getting off to a fast start,” said Momrik. The coach believes the girls are going to need their “A” game to put the clamps on the Joburg’s offense, but yet get the scoring they need to hand the Cardinals their first loss.

Posen (17-2) had their remaining regular season game canceled last Thursday against Wolverine. The district semifinals played Wednesday night (past press time) at Johannesburg pitted Onaway and Atlanta in the first game at 6 p.m. Onaway has defeated Atlanta by as many as 40 during the regular season.

Posen gets Joburg in the late game of the Wednesday night doubleheader, looking for a chance to advance to the district championship game in what has to be considered one of the toughest playoffs in the state. The regional tournament will be played at Traverse City West High School.
