Onaway High School?s chapter of the National Honor Society doubled its numbers during a ceremony led Tuesday by adviser Kymberly Wregglesworth and the chapter?s officers. The ceremony to induct the new members, which included 16 young women and two young men, was the chapter?s 56th such celebration.

Membership in the National Honor Society (NHS) is one of the highest honors that may be awarded to a high school student. Membership is based on four ideals that a student must possess for selection in the National Honor Society. Students must excel in academics, leadership, service and character.

WITH THE ceremony taking place on St. Patrick?s Day, Wregglesworth commented that it is one of many holidays celebrated by a diverse nation of people. ?Our country is great because of the diversity,? said Wregglesworth during her opening comments. ?We accept it, we encourage it.? She said Onaway?s NHS chapter is a ?very diverse? group of young people from the community.

?These 35 young men and women are the best and the brightest from our school,? said Wregglesworth, referring to all the chapter members, ?but they also represent a great variety of personalities in our little school community.? The students range from all-state athletes, scholars, outstanding musicians, talented actors and actresses, to those who can?t carry a tune, hit a fast pitch or are terrified of public speaking.

?ONE THING they all have common, however, is their dedication to our school and community, which may have shown through their previous years of service,? she said. The current members of the National Honor Society have completed several service projects this school year and will join with new members to complete several more before the year is over.

Wregglesworth turned the ceremony to the officers to properly induct the new members with the reading of the certification of membership.

The new members are as follows: Alyssa Bruning, Heather LaFave, Kate Chapman, Jasmine Materna, Brittani Crisp, Thomas McDade, Shaun Curtis, Raquel Moran, Deanna DeMaestri, Amanda Pomranke, Molly Ellenberger, Danielle Reece, Heather Hoffmeyer, Renee

Schlak, Stephanie Knight, Timory Wilcox, Stephanie Kortman and Chelsea Winfield.,p> The students raised their right hands and took a pledge and signed the book of membership.

Onaway?s NHS has had representatives at the Northeast Michigan Juvenile Diabetes Walk for the Cure, sponsored two American Red Cross blood drives, cleaned the sides of M-68 from Stoney Creek to Porter Road during Earth week, as well as hosted father/daughter and mother/son dances at the school.

?I?m very proud to work with them,? said Wregglesworth, ?I am very proud of the fact that we are doubling our membership tonight.?

The officers are: Hayley O?Meara, president; Stephanie Richards, vice president; and Danielle Cleaver, secretary.
