Senior Hayley O?Meara and junior Allie Nave were recently named to the Associated Press (AP) honorable mention all-state teams for basketball.

By earning the honor both girls also qualify for academic all-state, as they carry high grade point averages. O?Meara has a 3.97 grade point average and Nave a 3.98. O?Meara finished the season averaging 22 points per game along with 1.7 assists, 4.3 steals and 3.4 rebounds.

?Hayley worked very hard to get here. It is bittersweet to see her go, she is just a hard working athlete and put in a lot of hours to get where she has gotten. She was also named first team all-conference, Alpena News all-area and was the Cheboygan Tribune player of the year. This all-state award is a culmination of all the hard work she has put in,? said coach Marty Mix.

Mix has had the opportunity to coach the duo, as he called them for a long time, since Presque Isle Basketball Association (PIBA) and not just in basketball. Both are five sport athletes for the Cardinals and he has had the pleasure of coaching them in track and cross country as well. Mix admits sometimes it was nice to go to a volleyball or softball game and just be able to watch them play.

?Whatever these two do they have done together. I have had these two since PIBA and it has been neat to watch them progress into where they are at now,? said Mix.

Nave was named all-state for the third straight year after averaging 11.3 points a game along with 8.3 assists, 5.6 steals and 6.7 rebounds. According to Mix, Nave is the general on the floor, bringing the ball up the court 99 percent of the time and directing the offense. Nave was also first team all-conference, the Alpena News player of the year and Cheboygan Tribune all-area.

?On top of being a five sport athlete she is a five sport all-conference athlete, which is pretty impressive. She holds a number of basketball school records, individual and with the team, and was recen

tly selected to the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan?s (BCAM) Reaching Higher Top 100 showcase, the top 100 players in all divisions who are underclassmen,? said Mix.

Mix talked about the conference season being one of the toughest conference seasons they have had as a Ski Valley team is in the semifinals (Joburg), four teams were in the regional hunt and the only thing that kept that number at four was that Onaway faced Joburg in districts.

Even with the tough conference season Nave and O?Meara both received every possible vote they could to be chosen to the first team all-conference.

The two girls will now await the release of the other all-state teams and hope to be selected to those as well.
