District streak ends at five for Viking boys

While the Posen boys? basketball program had its streak of five consecutive district titles come to an end Wednesday, fans got a glimpse of the future and it looks bright. The Vikings (6-14) lost their first district game in six years Wednesday night, 67-49, to host Joburg. The last district loss was at Hillman, when a young group of sophomores led by Aaron Hincka and Matt Ponik let a fourth quarter lead get away from them.

?We had a horrible third quarter, that was a killer for us,? said head coach Steve Hentkowski following the final contest of the year. ?We shot only 10 percent.? Hentkowski?s lineup varied throughout the night, with most of the players that have taken the Vikes through the season, with a sprinkling of underclassman called up from the junior varsity.

Freshman Jerome Ciarkowski?s steal in the early moments of the fourth quarter got Posen within six, 49-43, but Joburg got their big man involved down low and made their free throws in the closing minutes, making seven in a row at one point. Sophomore Shane Hentkowski led Posen with 23.
