The Rogers City Huron wrestling team traveled to St. Ignace Saturday for the Straits Area Conference tournament. Rogers City finished fourth on the day with 123 points. Mio won the conference title with 157 points followed by St. Ignace with 155.5 and Sault Ste. Marie with 140.

Freshman Joey Sobeck took first place at 103 pounds recording two pins, his record now stands at 43-5 on the season. ?Joey was just Joey, he doesn?t get rattled. As a freshman with a record of 43-5 he just keeps going on, he has a brilliant career ahead of him,? said coach Pat Lamb.<9> Sophomore co-captain Devin Pommerenke earned his 100th career victory in his first match of the day and went on to win his finals match to secure win number 101. Pommerenke now has a season record of 48-0 with nine wins by forfeit and 39 pins. With one more pin Pommerenke will tie the record for pins in a single season. ?Devin was just phenomenal, to have the wins and pins he has as just a sophomore is a phenomenal feat for anyone,? said coach Lamb.

Sophomore Greg Tulgestke took second place at 130 pounds going 1-1 on the day. ?Greg Tulgestke wrestled real well and is coming on strong of late,? said coach Lamb. Three Hurons earned third place finishes in the conference, Ben Tulgestke (152), Daniel Marx (135) and Mike Pacella (189).

Finishing fourth at the tournament were Travis Fleis (112), Travis Lafferty (119), Cameron Wilk (125) and Jacob Reisener (160).

?We were right there, with a full team roster we could have easily won the tournament. We lost three matches to wrestlers we have beaten before tha

t would have had some of our guys placing third. That is not good for our district seeding but hopefully we can come back strong for team districts on Thursday,? said coach Lamb.

The Hurons will be hosting team districts this Thursday beginning at 6 p.m. The Hurons will take on county rival Onaway at 6 p.m. with the winner wrestling the winner of the St. Ignace/Boyne City match following.

The Hurons have won 22 consecutive team district titles and will look to make the number 23 today. ?There is no doubt in my mind that we can do it, but it is going to take a total team effort,? said coach Lamb.

Rogers City will also host individual districts on Saturday featuring Boyne City, Charlevoix, Gwinn, Iron Mountain, Iron River West Iron County, Kalkaska, Mancelona, Manistique, Munising, Newberry, Norway, Onaway, Rudyard, St. Ignace and Traverse City St. Francis.
