Girls win conference bowling title; four Hurons earn all-conference

The Rogers City bowling teams hosted the final match of the Northern Michigan Bowling Conference season Saturday at Nautical Lanes. In their first match of the day the girls? team easily overtook Gaylord winning the match by score of 29-1.

In the second match of the day the Hurons faced St. Ignace in a match that would determine the conference championship. Rogers City would take the first baker game 202-170 to take the early 4-0 lead in the match. St. Ignace would battle back taking baker game two 189-160 to tie the score at four.

Just three pins would separate the two teams for totals of the baker games as Rogers City took the two points for totals winning 362-359 giving them a 6-4 lead in the match with the regular games remaining.

Regular game one could have gone either way but the Hurons came out on top by seven pins, 895-888 and took two individual points to make the lead 12-7 with one game remaining.

Although they would take only two individual points the Hurons would win the second game 886-810 and take the totals 1,781-1,698 to win the match 20-10 and capture the conference championship. ?The girls? match against St. Ignace was the best girls? match I have seen since bowling started. The girls head into regionals on a high note after defeating St. Ignace and winning the conference,? said coach Brian Bannasch.

Junior Tayler Bannasch finished first in the conference individual standings while sophomore Katie Darga was fourth to earn all-conference honors.

Bowlers and their scores on the day were; Brogan Brege (166, 145, 166, 134), Ashley Bellmore (177, 150, 180, 145), Kaelie Florip (127, 190, 169, 202), Tayler Bannasch (188, 178, 235), Darga (224, 202, 170), Liz Atkins (94) and Cheyenne DuVerney (133). THE ROGERS CITY boys? team would take on St. Ignace in their first match and make quick work of the Saints winning 27-3.

For the second match of the day the Hurons faced off against the Cheboygan Orange team and looked to avenge an earlier loss to the Chiefs. Rogers City would take baker game one 227-186 before losing game two 190-236 and losing totals 417-422 to find themselves in a 6-4 hole heading into the regular games.

The Hurons would take three of the five individual points in game one but would lose the game 983-1,031 making the score 7-12 heading into the final game. Rogers City would take game two 1,037-971 and win three individual points to win totals 2,020-2,002 and win the match 16-14. Match three of the day pitted the Hurons against the Cheboygan Black team and the Hurons would dominate winning the match 28-2 to finish second in the conference behind the Cheboygan Orange team.

Bowlers and their scores for the day were; Lucas Bellmore (151, 180, 173, 200), Tony Bannasch (240, 201, 194, 201, 196), Robert Dietlin (254, 207, 215, 222, 219), Devon Ferris (219, 223, 169, 151), Al Gajewski (193, 180, 225, 220, 162), Travis Smolinski (197, 221, 217), Aaron Smolinski (159), Alex Lemmon (201), Jay Dehring/Ken Wirgau (129) and Tom Darga (161).

?The talent of the Rogers City bowlers was very evident on the all-conference teams with Tayler Bannasch and Robert Dietlin taking first, and Al Gajewski and Katie Darga also making the teams,? said coach Bannasch.

Only the top five bowlers in the conference earned all-conference honors and outside of Dietlin, Tayler Bannasch and Katie Darga the teams were made up of all seniors. The Hurons are now off until February 27 and 28 when they will compete in regional action in Traverse City.
