Again, rivalry game doesn?t disappoint

The rivalry between Rogers City and Posen never seems to disappoint. Going into the game, Rogers City had been playing pretty well since the Christmas break, and like the first matchup in December, were expected to come into Posen and win walking away. That again proved to be nothing more than talk.

The final score indicates a lopsided final, but Posen came from behind, trimming a 13-point lead to three with about six minutes to go.

The Vikings played hard, fought hard, but couldn?t contend with the Hurons size or playmakers.

Rogers City?s big fellows were a huge part of the win, but playmakers Erik Meharg and Justin Idalski are a couple of nice offensive weapons for head coach Tom Adrian to have in his arsenal.

Meharg poured in the three-pointers for RC and is a terrific scoring threat. I don?t know how to explain his shot, but it is something like putting the cookie jar on the top shelf of a cupboard. It?s almost like he lifts the ball up with two hands in one motion and lets it fly, and ?swoosh,? it goes through.

Idalski is everywhere on the court. He?s applying the defensive pressure on the first man down court, leaping high in the air for a rebound, or getting the ball on one end of the court, and firing the ball to the other end to a waiting player to score points. Idalski and Meharg are a nice combination.

The biggest problem the Hurons had Tuesday was consistency in their offensive sets. There were too many times they looked impatient, ran down the floor, put up a shot, and Posen had the ball again.

The Vikings, to their credit, were incredibly patient. Head coach Steve Hentkowski was pleased with the way his team handled the ball. They did an excellent job of moving it around, and probably better than they did back in December, but couldn?t convert on their scoring chances.

Posen has made some excellent strides and are playing with a lot of intensity, but the schedule has been absolutely brutal. They played North Star League heavyweights Hillman, Fairview and Hale in 2009. Those teams are taking turns knocking each other around at the top of the standings.

This week they were at home against always tough Rogers City, and now they are off to Mio, which is always a tough place to win. Fairview and Cedarville are coming up, so it just doesn?t get any easier. Other notes from the rivalry:

? The crowds aren?t what they used to be. There used to be a time when it was standing room only in the Posen gym. Now, there are open benches, which was unheard of a short few years ago.

There is just too much basketball in one week, and a lot of folks are not used to it, or don?t have the time.

? Coach Adrian is sporting black shoes these days. The last I saw, he had some brown dress shoes. Black is better Tom.

The 2008 Rogers City High School football team has earned academic all state. There were 15 teams in Division 7 honored. They had a cumulative grade point average of 3.452, which put them in 14th place.

On top of the list, was state champion, Traverse City St. Francis, with a GPA of 3.916. Rudyard and Newberry were also on the list, so there are a lot of really smart football players in northern Michigan, which is nice to know.

Just when the Pistons starting playing really well, they have fallen on tough times, against some weaker opponents. They seem to be out of sync, and coach Michael Curry may be in over his head with this group.

Is there any coach that can handle Sheed, A.I. and the Rip situation. He might be a good coach in a bad situation. Winning would quiet a lot of his naysayers.

Did you know Curry holds a master?s degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University. His son Deon Curry plays football as a wide receiver for Michigan State University.
