Presque Isle Lighthouse Christmas described as ?magical’

New Presque Isle Lighthouse provided a magical backdrop for a special Christmas celebration this past weekend at Presque Isle Park.

With the steady snowfall, it was as if the historic landmark was in a giant snow globe. Norman Rockwell would have been impressed and got out his paintbrush and canvas.

There were horse drawn wagon rides circling the lighthouse; young people sledding on whatever hills they could find; visits with Father Christmas; festive holiday music from local entertainers; and at the keeper?s quarters, visitors could step back in time and see how a Christmas tree in 1905 was decorated.

?WE THOUGHT this was an absolutely fantastic event,? said Sharon Ulrich, president of the Presque Isle Women?s Club. ?I heard some people call it magical and wonderful, the weather was perfect. The kids all had a great time.?

At the keeper?s quarters, one of the highlights was the Christmas tree designed by Denise McDonald of the Flower Spot of Onaway.

Nancy Brown was the program director and points out the unique decorations. ?This is very authentic,? said Brown. ?She stuck with the 1905 period. There are pinecones, deer antlers, pheasant feathers, cranberry strings, gingerbread cookie ornaments and grapevine stars.?

Elementary students from Alpena and Presque Isle Counties we

re taking field trips this week to tour the home and take part in other ?Old Fashioned? Christmas activities. ?WE?VE HAD people come in here and have their children?s pictures taken in front of this tree,? said Brown. The keeper?s quarters also was the site of the musical groups.

In the building across from the lighthouse, Santa made himself available to talk with children. ?They wanted dollies that go to the bathroom and some of them wished for high ticket items like an X Box 360, and others would be happy with warm clothes to play out in the snow,? said Santa, who visited with 100 children Saturday.

Early Saturday there was a story time dramatic presentation of ?How the Grinch Stole Christmas.? Organizers are looking bringing the event back next year and building on their first year success.
