Pommerenke and Sobeck place at the Marquette Challenge. Host Barrett tourney Saturday

The Rogers City varsity wrestling team traveled to the 16 team Marquette Challenge on Saturday and was met with some tough competition. Only two Hurons would place on the day in freshman Joey Sobeck (103) and sophomore Devin Pommerenke (285). Pommerenke entered the tournament ranked number one in Division Four at his weight class with a perfect 12-0 record winning all of his matches by pin. After winning the Challenge as a freshman Pommerenke looked for a return trip to the championship match under the lights at Marquette High School.

In his first match of the day Pommerenke would make quick work of Adam Robinson of Mason winning by pin in just 31 seconds. Next up would be Shea McGillen of eighth ranked New Lothrop. Pommerenke again wasted no time winning by pin in 48 seconds to earn himself a spot in the finals. Under the spotlights for the second straight season Pommerenke took on Ken Wedgewood of Jackson Northwest. Pommerenke would take an early lead with a takedown and some back points. In the second period Pommerenke turned Wedgewood on his back and pinned him at the 2:52 mark to win the championship and keep his record perfect, 15-0 with 15 pins.

Sobeck entered the tournament ranked number seven in Division Four. In his first match of the day he pinned Gladstone?s Jalen McDonnel in 1:44 setting up a battle with eighth ranked Ryan Gauthier of Iron Mountain. In the match against Gauthier, Sobeck would battle hard but get nothing going losing 9-0. Sobeck would then battle through the consolation bracket by defeating J.J. Sadler of Munising 6-2, pinning Wyatt Booth of Merril in 59 seconds and defeating Nick Reddy of Grandville 10-6 to finish in fifth place with a 4-1 record on the day.

Other winners for the Hurons were Travis Lafferty (119) who was 1-2 on the day winning b

y pin over Jacob Wells of Gwinn. Cameron Wilk won his first round match against Sam Federoff of Pine River 7-4 before being pitted against two-time state champion Allen Krupp of New Lothrop in round two. Wilk finished the day 1-2. The Hurons finished the day with just 46 points in 13th place. Gaylord won the tournament with 183 points followed by Grandville with 163. LAST WEDNESDAY at Oscoda High School the Hurons battled Ogemaw Heights losing 48-29 and Oscoda winning 48-12. Double winners for the Hurons included Travis Fleis (112), Ben Tulgestke (152), Jacob Reisner (160), Jim Tomas (171) and Pommerenke (285).

Going 1-1 on the day were Keegan Urban (130), Greg Tulgestke (125), Luke Ryan (140), Daniel Marx (145) and Mike Pacella (215). The Hurons dual meet record now stands at 4-5. The Hurons will be at home this Saturday for the annual Bill Barrett tournament beginning at 10 a.m.
