Nicole Purol named most valuable player for volleyball in NSL

The best team in the North Star League had the best player, as senior attacker Nicole Purol was bestowed with the most valuable player award for the 2008 season. Purol was part of a historic Viking squad that plowed new ground for the program, winning the school’s first league and district titles. Their record was 13-3 in the NSL and 3-0 at districts. In games played at district the girls were 9-0.

Posen lost to Pellston, who qualified for the final four at Battle Creek. “There is a lot that can be said about her,” said head coach John Dietlin. “I guess her greatest attribute was understanding her role, what she could do, how she did it and how she could make her teammates better. With Nicole and the rest of the girls it was always about the team. It wasn’t about one individual.”

Dietlin said Purol was a consistent attacker, and when all the stats are added up, she’ll probably have the school record.

‘She had a very good approach,” said Dietlin. She also had a good mental approach. It wasn’t always about how hard she hit it, sometimes it was about location.” Purol spent two years on the varsity, but really started making her mark late in her junior season.

Senior setter Tina Mulka also was a first team selection. Victoria Wozniak and Cheryl Romel made all-conference second team, while Janice Ciarkowski was an honorable mention.
