Familiar names finish first in festival run

Saturday morning had plenty of sunshine and good temperatures for the participants in the two Nautical City run/walk races held in Rogers City, ran by the Rogers City Cross Country team and parents.
A one-mile run/walk with six age divisions was won by 11-year old Ryan Leslie who ran the course in 6:49, he was followed closely by Alyssa Moulds, 13, who was second overall and the first female to cross the line with a time of 6:53.23. The numbers in the mile run were up from a year ago as 59 people participated in the race. The 6K race had 13 age divisions and a wide range of participants including 2 _ month old Ellis Garrett, the son of Logan (McLennan) Garrett and great grandchild of the oldest participant in the race, Jean McLennan who turned 90 on Sunday.
Aaron Smuda won the race for the third year in a row with a time of 19:23.80. ?This is my third first place finish in a row, before that I was finishing in the top five but never in the top. When I went to college I got faster and that was good. This will be my last year of running at Bowling Green State University where I hope to be the team captain. I wanted to run a better time but with the wind I think I did as good as I could do even though I wanted to go faster. I am always scared of Denny (Paull), he?s always right there, you know he is always going to be a contender. Last year he almost got me, I had to out kick him in the end,? said Smuda about his race.
Lacey Kreft finished first for the females with a time of 25:52.84. ?I haven?t raced since I won this race two years ago. I am just happy to be running again. This is the first time all three of us (sisters Kaylee and Chelsea) have been able to run this race together so that was nice. I will be a junior at Central Michigan University studying pre-physical therapy, a health fitness major, I quit the team last year because it just wasn?t working out, with me being hurt a lot and with classes it was too hard. But I keep telling my friends on the team I will come back and run with them when I can, just to run,? said Kreft.
Denny Paull placed third overall with a time of 19:48.02 to be named male grand champion while Janet Ramsay was named female grand champion for her 48th place finish in 29:55.17. Medals were given out for the top three males and females in each age division for both races. Miss Rogers City 2008 Jordyn Lamb as well as her court of first runner-up Jessica Ruppert and Kaelie Florip helped direct the race along with the cross country team.
