Millersburg officials endorse preliminary plans for trailhead

John Rowe of UP Engineers and Architects, Inc. came before the Millersburg village commission Monday night with the preliminary plans for the trailhead project in Millersburg.

The project is funded by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and locally managed by the Presque Isle County Development Commission (CDC). Also participating on the project steering committee are village clerk Melody Beswick, water supervisor Wendy Robins, village trustee Florence Hughes, street administrator Larry Dittmar, and historical society members Virgil Freel and Jeff Witsitt.

The project would feature a new parking lot, a warming area and bathrooms, lots of open grassy areas that could be used for many activities, an in-line/ice skating park, historical displays and many other new features. ?We have really concentrated on making this project useful for all four seasons, the warming station would provide shelter and shade in the summer time as well,? said Rowe.

After going through the plans with Row

e the village commission unanimously supported the preliminary plans pending public comments. The plans will be on display at the Millersburg Village office until July 31 where members of the public can look at them and make comments.

Emily Meyerson, DNR northern lower peninsula trailways coordinator, was also at the meeting to approach the commission for a resolution of support for the Alpena to Cheboygan rail-trail development that is being coordinated by the DNR and the Michigan Department of Transportation. The plan would include 70 miles of trail stretching through 18 townships, cities and villages.

The commission unanimously passed a resolution of support for the trail surfacing and also pledged $1,104 in matching funds to get the project moving.
