Major girls take first game in state finals

MAJOR GIRLS ?In a game where the winner took all ? the district title and a trip to the state finals, the Rogers City major girls all-star team defeated Onaway July 10, 10-0 to earn a trip to the state finals in Mattawan Michigan. The team defeated Mattawan 6-3 in the opener Thursday and was to play again Friday (July 18).

Rogers City would strike first with one run in the first inning to take the lead, they scored one more in the third and eight in the fifth while holding Onaway scoreless en route to the win. Anna Couture had five strikeouts and surrendered five walks but did not allow a hit to earn the pitching victory. Tamara Lupu took the loss for Onaway striking out four, walking five and giving up eight hits.

Nikki LaLonde and Couture each had two hits to lead the offense for Rogers City. Cassie Brege had a double, Ashley Meyers had a triple and Logan Fleming and Abbie Delekta each added a hit in the win. Onaway was able to force the winner take all game by defeating Rogers City 3-2 the night before. The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Rogers City pushed a run across, Onaway answered with one in the sixth to tie the game at one and force extra innings. In the eighth inning Rogers City would score one while Onaway scored two to win the game.

Meyers suffered the pitching loss despite giving up just two hits while striking out nine and walking three. Emily Estep earned the win for Onaway striking out eight and walking two. Meyers was 2 for 4 at the plate to lead the team. Couture, Delekta, Courtney Streich and Rebecca Meredith each had hits for Rogers City. ?It was a very exciting game, both teams played excellent,? said Rogers City coach Donna Couture.

MINOR GIRLS ? The minor girls all-star team is now 1-1 in their district tournament in Cheboygan. The team fell by a score of 15-2 to Cheboygan on Tuesday evening, when eight of Rogers City?s first nine hitters struck out against Cheboygan?s pitching. Monday the team won 16-3 over Harbor Springs behind the pitching of Taylor Chojnacki, Alexa Quaine, Lizzie Martin and Megan Brege who each pitched one inning of the mercy rule shortened game. Martin was 3-3 at the plate including two doubles, Sarah Meredith was 1-2 with a double, Victoria Bullock was 2-2, Autumn Idalski was 2-3 and Quaine was 2-3. The team was scheduled to face off against Tahquamenon Falls Wednesday evening.

MAJOR BOYS – The major boys all-star team is now out of the district tournament, placing third in the district. Rogers City defeated Harbor Spring 10-5 behind solid pitching by Paul Wilbert who had six strikeouts. Casey Szatkowski had two hits and Daniel Lemmon had a three run home run. Rogers City also defeated Sault. Ste. Marie 11-4, Lemmon earned the win on the mound. Rogers City also defeated

Tri-Rivers 12-2; Lemmon and Jacob Malocha were both 3-4 and Colton Fessler hit a double off the fence in the win. The team was eliminated from play after losing 15-2 to Petoskey no further details were available.

JUNIOR BOYS – The Rogers City junior baseball all-stars lost to Cheboygan in the district final game on July 9 in Harbor Springs by a score of 13-3. Chad Karsten was the starting pitcher and was later relieved by Alex Jozwiak. Four Rogers City players had one hit, Austin Brege, Alex Jozwiak (RBI), Chad Karsten and Keegan Urban (2-RBI’s). The loss concludes the season for the junior boys.

MINOR BOYS ? The minor boys all-star team traveled to Petoskey for the district tournament beginning on Monday at 7 p.m. The team fell to Petoskey 10-0, Travis Sharpe was the losing pitcher but recorded a double in the loss. Tuesday evening the team lost a heartbreaker to Sault Ste. Marie, the game was tied 4-4 going into the seventh inning. Rogers City was the visitors and went ahead on an inside-the-park home run off the bat of Quintin Kelly and added one more to lead 6-4 headed into the bottom of the seventh inning. Sault Ste. Marie battled back in the bottom half of the inning to win the game 7-6. Kelly, Justin Saile and Matthew Altman pitched for Rogers City. Kelly started the game and recorded seven strikeouts before making way for Saile. The team has now been eliminated from the district tournament.
