Forty-Five honor students lead the way for RCHS class of 2008

Dustin Hein and Morgan Schuiteman have been named co-valedictorians of the class of 2008 at Rogers City High School. The class of 73 students, over half of them being honor students will graduate June 1.

Hein (4.00) is the son of Scott and Mary Jo Hein. He has participated in football, wrestling and baseball for the Hurons. He is a member of the National Honor Society (treasurer), and Peace Lutheran Church Youth Group. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, being outdoors, running, lifting weights and spending time with his family and friends. After graduating in June, Hein plans to attend Michigan Technological University to pursue a degree in engineering.

Schuiteman (4.00) is the daughter of Dr. Jay and Debora Schuiteman. She has been in football cheerleading, where she has been co-captain for two seasons, National Honor Society (secretary), Natural Helpers, orange team, Educational Talent Search, was in track for two seasons, has been the vice-president of her class for two years and has been involved in dance at The Dance Centre in Alpena where she is on the competitive dance team. Schuiteman was also the first runner-up in the Nautical City Queen?s Pageant. Schuiteman plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University to pursue a degree in pre-medicine. After receiving her bachelor?s degree she plans to go to either optometry school or medical school to obtain a degree in ophthalmology.

Jessie LaLonde (3.97) is the daughter of Joe and Rae LaLonde and has been named the salutatorian of the class of 2008. She has played softball for the Hurons and has been involved with National Honor Society, Relay for Life, is a class officer and Vacation Bible School. She also enjoys being outdoors, swimming, running, rollerblading, bike riding and hanging out with her friends. After graduating from RCHS, LaLonde plans to attend Grand Valley State University to study pre-medicine. Upon receiving a bachelor?s degree she plans to transfer to a larger university to obtain her doctorate in pediatrics.

Kelsie Kasuba (3.95) is the daughter of Vicky Kasuba and Daniel Ferris. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Natural Helpers. She has also participated in track for the Hurons. Kasuba enjoys hunting, fishing and being with friends and family. Kasuba plans to pursue a career in the medical field after graduation, she would like to become an orthopedic surgeon but isn?t sure yet.

Sasha Gapczynski (3.87) is the daughter of Lee and Joan Gapczynski. She is a member of the National Honor Society, ski club, and was a football cheerleader. She also enjoys reading, fishing, shopping, traveling, scrapbooking, listening to music and being outdoors. She was also the second runner-up in the Nautical City Queen?s pageant. Gapczynski plans to attend Ferris State University to obtain a doctorate in pharmacy in the fall.

Cynthia Belusar (3.87) is the daughter of David and Carol Belusar. She is the president of the class of 2008 and the National Honor Society. She is also a member of D-13, Natural Helpers and key club. She enjoys swimming, running, sledding, playing games, reading, traveling and being with her family and friends. Belusar is undecided on what she will do following her high school graduation in June.

Monica Cercone (3.87) is the daughter of Joe and Sally Cercone. She is the treasurer of the class of 2008, is involved with Natural Helpers, National Honor Society and student council. She has played basketball, volleyball and softball for the Hurons and also enjoys being outdoors, swimming, rollerblading, being with family and hanging out with her friends. Following graduation Cercone plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University to pursue a career in medicine, possibly as an occupational therapist.

Jared Fleming (3.82) is the son of Jerry and Darla Fleming. He is a member of the National Honor Society, key club and Natural Helpers. He recently obtained the rank of Eagle Scout and enjoys hunting, fishing and collecting coins and antiques. Fleming will attend Lawrence Technological University to work toward a master?s degree in architecture in the fall.

Lauren Hanson (3.81) is the daughter of Richard and Lori Hanson. She has participated in basketball, volleyball and softball for the Hurons. She is a member of National Honor Society, Educational Talent Search, Natural Helpers and the orange team. She also enjoys rollerblading and hanging out with friends and family. After graduating from RCHS in June, Hanson plans to attend Alpena Community College to study business.

Mary Smuda (3.70) is the daughter of Thomas and Diane Smuda. She played basketball and softball for the Hurons. She is also the vice president of the National Honor Society and secretary of the student council as well as a member of Natural Helpers. She also enjoys beach volleyball, rollerblading, camping, swimming, golfing and hanging out with her friends. Smuda plans to attend Alma College, Bethany Lutheran College or Bowling Green State University to receive a liberal arts education.

Kaitlin Klingshirn (3.65) is the daughter of Karl and Jennie Klingshirn. She is a member of National Honor Society, was a Straits Area Conference scholar athlete and has been dancing for 14 years at the Dance Centre in Alpena. For the Hurons Klingshirn participated in basketball, volleyball and track. She also participated in Close-Up Washington and is a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Klingshirn plans to attend Alma College to study pre-medicine then attend Central Michigan University?s physician assistant program.

Derek Schleben (3.62) is the son of Elmer Schleben and Judy Waldroup. He has participated in football and wrestling for the Hurons. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, traveling and hanging out with his friends. After graduation Schleben plans to attend Ferris State University to study business.

Thomas (T.J.) Sobeck (3.55) is the son of George and Joanne Sobeck. He has played football, wrestled and runs track for the Hurons. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Natural Helpers. He enjoys playing video games, being outdoors and hanging out with his friends. Sobeck plans to attend Grand Valley State University in the fall to study nursing.

Andrew Grambau (3.53) is the son of Karl and Heidi Grambau. He has participated in cross-country, basketball and track as well as knowledge bowl. He enjoys announcing, broadcasting and computers. Grambau is planning to attend Grand Valley State University to study broadcasting after graduating from RCHS.

Jerome Gapczynski (3.51) is the son of Lee and Joan Gapczynski. As a Huron he has played football, wrestled and runs track. He enjoys being with his friends, lifting weights, listening to music and playing sports. Gapczynski plans to attend Ferris State University to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Ryan Derry (3.48) is the son of William and Ann Derry. He enjoys attending sporting events and car shows, and hanging out with his friends. Derry plans to attend Alpena Community College to become an electrician.

Jenny Fleming (3.46) is the daughter of Jerry and Darla Fleming. She has played basketball, volleyball and softball for the Hurons. She is involved in the National Honor Society, Natural Helpers, Educational Talent Search, key club and the Big?s and Little?s Mentoring Program. Fleming plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University to begin her medical career in hopes of becoming a pediatrician.

Joseph Kromer (3.44) is the son of Robert and Connie Kromer. He enjoys spending time on the computer, reading and learning to play the guitar. After graduation in June Kromer plans to attend Lake Superior State University to study medicine.

Scott Kowalewsky (3.43) is the son of Karl and Vicky Kowalewsky. He has played basketball and baseball for the Hurons and also enjoys golfing, hunting, fishing, playing cards, traveling, music and hanging out with his friends. Kowalewsky plans to play basketball and study nursing at Alpena Community College in the fall. In the future he hopes to become a nurse anesthetist.

Rachel Flanery (3.41) is the daughter of Lori Wirgau. She enjoys hanging out with her friends, babysitting and working at the Montessori School. Flanery plans to attend Central Michigan University to study teaching special education in the fall.

Donald (D.J.) Dehring Jr. (3.40) is the son of Donald and Marci Dehring. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has wrestled and played baseball for the Hurons. Dehring plans to attend Alpena Community College to study nursing after graduating from RCHS in June.

Edward Talaske (3.37) is the son of David and Kathy Talaske. He is the editor-in-chief of the yearbook, a senior representative of the key club, a member of the National Honor Society and ski club. Talaske enjoys hanging out with his friends, watching movies, listening to music and attending concerts. Talaske plans to study journalism at Central Michigan University in the fall.

Danielle Roeske (3.36) is the daughter of Glen and Denise Roeske. She is involved in Natural Helpers, key club, National Honor Society, Educational Talent Search, Big?s and Little?s Mentoring, and also played softball and ran cross country while in high school. She has also volunteered at the Huron branch of Calcite Credit Union. Roeske plans to attend Alpena Community College for two years before transferring to Michigan State University to become a veterinary technician.

Dustin Peltz (3.36) is the son of Bob and Josie Peltz. He is in the National Honor Society, Natural Helpers, the Rogers City promotions committee and is the president of the key club. Peltz plans to attend Northwood University to pursue a degree in business management.

Elly Plath (3.35) is the daughter of Jamie and Tammy Plath. She has participated in cross country, volleyball and softball while attending RCHS. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the orange team, the Big?s and Little?s Mentoring and has been a Straits Area Conference scholar athlete. She also participated in Close-Up Washington as a junior. Plath will attend Central Michigan University in the fall to study interior decorating and design.

Tharin Wilk (3.27) is the son of Ann Wilk. He ran cross country and wrestled for the Hurons. He also enjoys hunting and fishing. Wilk plans to attend Central Michigan University in the fall to study mechanical engineering.

Nicole Hayner (3.30) is the daughter of Kathy and Bill LaLonde, and John and Lisa Hayner. She has been a cheerleader for the Hurons, is in National Honor Society, Natural Helpers and on the yearbook staff. She has also competed in both the Presque Isle County Fair and Nautical City Queen?s Pageants. Hayner will study cardiovascular sonography at Kirtland M-Tech in the fall.

Danielle Carter (3.25) is the daughter of Carla Carter. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Natural Helpers and the Big?s and Little?s Mentoring Program. She enjoys hanging out with her friends, going to sporting events and spending time with her family. Carter plans to attend Alpena Community College to begin her studies in radiography following her graduation in June.

Henry Dietlin IV (3.24) is the son of Henry and Nancy Dietlin III. He has played football, baseball and bowled for the Hurons. He also enjoys chemistry. Dietlin?s future plans are to study chemistry at Saginaw Valley State University where he will be a member of the bowling team. He plans to join the Professional Bowling Association after college.

Danielle Zielaskowski (3.22) is the daughter of Barb Zielaskowski and John and Jane Zielaskowski. She is involved with the National Honor Society and enjoys walking her dogs. She works at the Rogers City Theater, Super Scoop, Elite Salon and JAZ Handyman as well as taking an online college course. Zielaskowski plans to attend Alpena Community College in the fall to study business.

Travis Farmer (3.22) is the son of Donna Emmons. He enjoys skateboarding, basketball, swimming and playing video games. Following his graduation from Rogers City High School, Farmer plans to get a job cooking at a restaurant.

Brittany Lutz (3.22) is the daughter of Ken and Denise Lutz. She enjoys drawing, painting, writing and poetry. Lutz plans to attend Alpena Community College in the fall to study graphic design.

Bret Karsten (3.21) is the son of Dr. Mark and Melissa Karsten. As a Huron he has played football, basketball and baseball. He is also a member of the National Honor Society. Karsten plans to attend Alpena Community College where he will play basketball but is undecided on a major.

Jordan Waibel (3.21) is the son of Randy and Cindy Waibel. He enjoys watching sports, going to concerts and spending time with his family and friends. Waibel plans to attend Northern Michigan University in the fall before transferring to Central Michigan University to pursue a career in psychology.

Matthew Peacock (3.17) is the son of Timothy and Valerie Peacock. He enjoys snowmobiling, swimming, boating, playing sports and spending time with his family and friends. Peacock plans to attend Alpena Community College to work toward his goal of becoming a successful chiropractor.

Ashley Basel (3.16) is the daughter of Terry and Anne Basel. She has played volleyball, and ran track and cross country for the Hurons. She is an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, Educational Talent Search, orange team, National Honor Society, Natural Helpers, competitive dance, student council and traveled to Close-Up Washington. She also won the title of Miss Rogers City at the Nautical City Queen?s Pageant last summer. Basel plans to attend Alma College to study in the pharmaceutical field in the fall.

Sarah Bruning (3.16) is the daughter of Julie Bruning. She ran cross country for the Hurons, is involved in Natural Helpers, National Honor Society and the drama club. She enjoys rollerblading, traveling and hanging out with her friends. Bruning plans to attend Alpena Community College for two years before transferring to Ferris State University or Saginaw Valley State University to earn a degree in physical therapy.

Derek Claus (3.15) is the son of Douglas and Denise Claus. He enjoys computers, gaming, bowling, reading, taking photos for the yearbook, campfires, swimming, water sports and being with family and friends. He also works at Rogers City Video. Claus plans to enjoy the summer and wants a future in the computer field.

Michael Vogler (3.11) is the son of Michael and Colleen Vogler. As a Huron he has ran track and cross country, wrestled and played golf. He has also been a member of the Knowledge Bowl team. Vogler plans to attend Northern Michigan University to study pre-law after graduation.

Chase McLennan (3.11) is the son of Scott and Shari McLennan. He has played football and wrestled for the Hurons. He enjoys being with friends, working out and playing video games. McLennan?s future plans are to attend Alpena Community College then transfer to a university to study sports medicine.

Jillian Liedtke (3.10) is the daughter of Karen Liedtke. She is involved with the National Honor Society, Big?s and Little?s Mentoring and Links. She participated in Close-Up Washington and enjoys photography and spending time with her family and friends. Liedtke plans to attend Alpena Community College for two years before transferring to Central Michigan University to study teaching special education.

John (Scott) Posthumus (3.10) is the son of John and Sheree Posthumus. He is involved in the key club, ski club and has served as the manager for the basketball team. He enjoys fixing things, four-wheeling, fishing, skiing, swimming and being outdoors. Posthumus plans to go to college to study in the automotive field after graduating from RCHS in June.

Joseph Finch (3.10) is the son of Robert and Loren

e Finch. He has participated in football, wrestling and baseball for the Hurons. He is involved with Natural Helpers and enjoys hunting and fishing. Finch plans to attend Alpena Community College then Ferris State University to study radiography.

Pangcheng Hang (3.03) is the daughter of Juachoj and Nov Hang. She is involved with key club, Natural Helpers, 4-H, Educational Talent Search, the Big?s and Little?s Mentoring and ski club. She enjoys playing sports, listening to music, reading and hanging out with her friends. Hang will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the fall to study science.

Patricia Getzmeyer (3.03) is the daughter of Ted and Beverly Getzmeyer. She is in the band, on the track team and a member of key club, Girl Scouts and the St. Ignatius Youth Group. Getzmeyer plans to attend North Central Michigan College to study early childhood education.
