Michele Peters accepts Monarch Award at UCF benefit

A dear friend of Michele Peters of Onaway spoke of her during a biographical video production presented Friday night at the United Communities Foundation?s benefit dinner at the Black Lake Golf Club, reminding Peters that her experience in theater began 40 years ago while on stage. It was that first step into the spotlight that helped create her life?s work and passion. The UCF honored Peters with the coveted Monarch Award for her dedication to arts, education, and culture within the community.

Anne Belanger of the UCF told Peters Friday night that her obvious passion for theater is what has inspired so many around her to also pursue the art.

?JUST LISTENING to your voice, and the enthusiasm you have,? said Belanger, ?it is so inspiring. What you do touches so many people, and we are very grateful for your talents.?

Among her long list of productions Peters has directed, acted, and sang in, she was also congratulated on her involvement with local youth, and sharing with them the excitement and possibilities of a theatrical career. Several of the young people Peters has touched spoke in the video production, thanking Peters for her dedication to their arts education.

The students of Peters said she would always be remembered for her laughter, her bright eyes, and big smile. Peters will also be remembered as a true asset to the arts within the local community and beyond.

Of her award, Peters said it was an honor to be nominated, and it was the ?little things? that got her where she is today.

?For all of those who are doing the ?little things? ? keep doing them,? said Peters. ?They are so important.?

The UCF was formed several years ago to address the needs of funding and support to the arts and education in Presque Isle County.

?ART IS all encompassing, and so important,? said Belanger. ?(The UCF) recognized a need in Presque Isle County ? we noticed the arts, education, and culture needed to be fortified. The arts are so much a part of our lives, from all scopes.?

In the past three years, the UCF has awarded seven scholarships to local students. Eleisha Perrault of Posen received a scholarship this year, and is now pursuing her degree as an art teacher.

?Posen has been hard hit,? said Belanger.

?They no longer have art or music in the curriculum. Eleisha came to me?and told me she wants to inspire young people to follow the path of art.?

Byron Valentine is another young person who received grant funding from UCF. Valentine is now in his 13th year studying in Latvia with the Youth for Understanding International Youth Exchange program.

In a letter, Valentine expressed his appreciation for the UCF?s support. He said he is interested in coming back to Presque Isle County to share his experiences with local youth, play the violin, and show others they can pursue a career in arts and music.

During Friday night?s benefit, area artists donated work to be auctioned off. Some of the artists included Barb Richards, Tom Moran, Bob Peltz, David Cook, Jerry Smith, Mary Pritchard, Sandie Heltsley, Deb Shiel, and Ron Rittner.
