Posen struggles in a home sweep by Mio

Posen volleyball coach John Dietlin had hoped for a better result in Tuesday?s home match against conference contender Mio, but the Vikings lost three straight in front of a good-sized crowd in the PHS gymnasium. ?Our biggest problem today was communication,? said Dietlin. ?When we don?t communicate well, we don?t pass well and you can?t get into a good passing attack.? The Vikings dropped the first game 17-25, the second 14-25, and the clincher 16-25. Posen is 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the North Star League. Their next action is tonight against volleyball rival Hillman. The Vikings won their first league game last Thursday against a hapless Arenac Eastern squad, but are still struggling against the higher tier clubs.

AFTER DROPPING the first game, Posen played tough through the first half of the middle contest. The Vikes came back from an early 3-6 deficit to tie the game at 7-all on an Elyse Perrault ace. Both teams hit the ball in the net, before Beth King made a sensational block on a perfectly set up play by Mio, which was going for a kill. With a 10-all tie, things started falling apart when a serving Posen player hit an errant shot under the net and off the judge standing by the support pole. Mio built on its 11-10 lead. They had an ace and a short serve drop in. The run continued as Posen hit the ball in the net and ripped another ball to the wall. It was 19-11 before Mio hit the ball in the net, but after the Posen point was scored the T-Bolts went on another four-point run to make the score 23-13. It ended on a Nicole Purol kill. Mio would get the next two points to finish off the home squad. Game three got off to a wickedly bad start for Posen, as Mio was ready to finish off the Vikes. The score was 8-0 before Dietlin called timeout.

AFTER A BUMP into the net by Mio, Kori Latz got Posen back into the game with an ace. It was 5-8 when Mio got the serve back on a b

lock. The crowd reacted when Tina Mulka punched away a potential Mio kill at the top of the net, but the excitement would end as the visitors built on an 11-8 lead and extended it to as much as 10, 23-13. ?Tomorrow we are going to work on passing, as well as communicating,? said Dietlin. ?We?ve got to overcome the inconsistency.?

Latz had three aces and three kills, while Autumn Reece added two aces. Mulka finished with five assists. The varsity swept lower tier Arenac, 25-6, 25-12, and 25-13. Latz delivered five kills, while Perrault was credited with seven assists. Renee Purol had three kills and three aces.

THE JV is 2-0 after taking a pair of matches against Mio and Arenac. The scores against Mio were: 25-6, 25-14, and 15-10. Arenac: 25-9, 22-25, 15-9. Lindsay Ponik had 10 aces against Mio.
