Fair queen pageant has nine contestants

Nine contestants will vie for the title of queen at the county fair June 28. The pageant will be conducted in the fair tent on the county fairgrounds in Millersburg at 7 p.m. Last year?s queen, Jessica Ruppert of Rogers City, will relinquish her title to one of nine contestants.

The contestants are Julia Lewandowski, Julie LaBar, Hailey Kimball, Heather Stalker, Jordyn Lamb, Cassandra Paisley, Kalene Brenner, Jenice Stricker, and Timory Wilcox. Julia Lewandowski is the 15-year-old daughter of Mark and Denise Lewandowski of Posen. She will be doing a jazz dance to the song ?Tres Desos.? ?I am proud to like in Presque Isle County and I would be honored to represent it as queen,? Julia said when asked why she would like to be fair queen.

Julie LaBar is 14, and the daughter of Michelle and Dana LaBar of Rogers City. She will be singing ?My Favorite Things? from ?The Sound of Music.? ?I want to represent Presque Isle County as queen because I love living here and I feel with the title, a lot more doors will be opened that will allow me to help my community,? Julie said.

Hailey Kimball, the 15-year-old daughter of Rocky and Jackie Kimball of Millersburg, is contestant number three. A patriotic tribute will be her talent presentation in the pageant. ?I want to represent Presque Isle County as queen because I am very proud of where I come from and I think I would do a good job of representing the area,? she said.

Contestant number four is Heather Stalker, the 17-year-old daughter of James and Marie Stalker of Millersburg. She will dance to ?Pop? using flexibility and self-choreography. ?I want to represent Presque Isle County as queen because I would like to show people how proud I am of our county,? Heather said.

Jordyn Lamb is the 15-year-old daughter of Riconda and Richard Lamb of Rogers City. She will be dancing to the song ?Me Ol? Bam-boo? from the movie ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.? ?I believe that serving my county as queen would be an honor that would open many doors. I will be able to meet new people, learn new leadership skills, and hopefully acquire a deeper knowledge of Presque Isle and what it has to offer,? Jordyn said.

Cassandra Paisley, contestant number six, is 15 and the daughter of Jennifer Hoyt and Christopher Paisley of Onaway. She will be singing ?Young and Beautiful,? made popular by Carrie Underwood. ?I would be representing everything I love about Presque Isle County, mainly the friends you have for life and the close families,? Cassandra said.

Contestant number seven is Kalene Brenner of Millersburg, the 13 year-old daughter of Bryan and Janice Brenner of Tennessee and Renee Brenner of Millersburg. She will be dancing to the song ?Hey Mickey,? for her talent presentation. She stated she wants to represent the county as queen ?because I have lived here for 13 years and I would love to show my appreciation,? Kalene said.

Jenice Stricker, the 16-year-old daughter of Roger and Margaret Stricker of Hawks, is contestant number eight. She will be singing ?Who I Am? for her talent presentation. ?I am a very genuine and friendly person who cares about the little things and can relate to everyone, young and old,? she said on why she is in the pageant.

Timory Wilcox is 14 and the daughter of April and Loren Wilcox of Onaway. She will be singing a late 1950s song ?Lipstick on Your Collar? for her talent presentation. ?I would like to represent Presque Isle County as queen because I would like to be a role model for the younger generations because when I was younger I liked to go to pageants and I looked up to them as role models,? Timory said.

Pageant director Tricia Selke, in her third year, said she is excited to have nine contestants.

?It tells me that the pageant has a good reputation within the county. The pageant is a good way to bring together young girls from every town in our county to establish long-lasting friendships.? The contestants are judged on a five-minute interview, coordination from the opening number, talent, evening gown, and a question from the judges. The queen?s pageant is on the first day of the county fair, which runs through July 1 at the fairgrounds in Millersburg.

OTHER EVENTS set for opening day at the county fair, June 28, include the opening of various displays at 10 a.m. and the opening of the Schmidt Amusement rides at 1 p.m. A pie and ice c

ream social begins at 6 p.m. On Friday, June 29, exhibits open at 10 a.m. including a flea market, arts and crafters, and various demonstrations including a working sawmill. Schmidt Amusement rides begin again at 1 p.m. Music in the tent will be provided by Chester?s Habit from Lewiston beginning at 2 p.m. A talent show, open mic style, begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 30 will again feature exhibits opening at 10 a.m. including a fish pond, face painting, milking a cow, and making ice cream, among others. A heavy horse pull takes place at noon in the horse arena, and a mud bog at 6 p.m. highlight the activities.

The fair opens Sunday, July 1 at 10 a.m. with many exhibits with the amusement rides and an antique tractor pull starting at noon. At 1 p.m. a horse speed show will take place. Gate admission for each day is $3 with some events inside the grounds charging admission.
